Experience the World of Noh Theatre: Onino Namida Special Performance in Tokyo

Immerse Yourself in the Noh Theatre Experience: 'Onino Namida'

a unique opportunity to see the fourth special performance of Nohgatari Danshizumu titled 'Jikkuri Tanoshimu Noh no Sekai: Onino Namida'. Scheduled for September 7, 2025, at the historical Yarai Noh Theatre located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, this event will focus solely on the theme of demons. Tickets are currently available for purchase through the ticketing platform Kanpeki, managed by Long Run Planning Co., Ltd.

A Closer Look at 'Onino Namida'

This year's performance aims to highlight the emotion behind the demons, shifting from the traditional perspective of demons that often evokes fear. Instead, performances such as the Kyogen 'Setsubun' and Noh 'Tsuchigumo' present a more emotional narrative that delves into the sorrows associated with these mythological figures. Demons in the show will symbolize those oppressed by powerful forces or individuals turned into demons due to betrayal — a blend of beauty, power, and poignancy.

The special programming features outstanding performers from the Kansai region, including the special guest Masahiro Nakamura from the Kanze School. Alongside him, Jiro Sakuma, a member from the Kanze School, will perform alongside Nakamura in a dynamic 'Inter-School Performance'. This collaboration between various schools showcases a unique fusion of Noh styles that enriches the viewing experience.

The Noh 'Tsuchigumo', famously adapted into Kabuki, notorious for its thrilling depiction of a spider's silk thrown onto the stage, provides a breathtaking visual and dramatic display. The staggering confrontation between the warrior and the demon creates an atmosphere of tension and excitement that is mesmerizing and unforgettable.

After Performance Discussion

Following the shows, there will be an engaging After Talk session on stage featuring the four main performers: Jiro Sakuma, Yoko Noguchi, Noriyoshi Okura, and Ryotaro Tsukuda. This provides a rare chance to gain insights and perspectives directly from the artists about their performances and the Noh art form itself.

Unique Opportunities

The Nohgatari Danshizumu, comprised of Shite actor Jiro Sakuma, Waki actor Noh Hiro, Kyogen artist Noriyoshi Okura, and Daiko player Ryotaro Tsukuda, is a creative unit formed during the pandemic. They sought to engage more with the public through virtual discussions and now also hold workshops and performances to bring the art of Noh to life outside conventional settings.
