Kurita Analysis Center Launches Specialized PFAS Water Quality Testing Service

Kurita Analysis Center and Their New PFAS Water Testing Service

In response to recent regulatory changes regarding water quality standards, the Kurita Analysis Center, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kurita Water Industries Ltd. based in Tsukuba, Ibaraki, has launched a specialized analytical service for PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances). This initiative aims to address the new inclusion of PFAS in water quality testing requirements effective from April 2023.

PFAS are a group of over 10,000 chemical substances known for their water-repellent and heat-resistant properties. Key compounds like PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid) and PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid) are found in numerous industrial and consumer products. However, concerns over their carcinogenic effects and negative impact on child development have led to stricter regulations, especially in Europe and North America. Accordingly, Japan has also mandated that PFOS and PFOA be included as regular testing items for certain water supplies, including dedicated water systems in residential buildings, schools, and factories.

In light of these developments, the Kurita Analysis Center has rolled out a dedicated service for analyzing PFAS levels in water drawn from specific water supplies, such as well water and groundwater intended for drinking. The analysis is conducted using advanced technology, specifically the Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method, and results are typically delivered within 10 business days. The service can detect PFOS and PFOA with a high level of precision down to 1ng/L.

Clients now have the option to choose a regular testing schedule in alignment with legal requirements every three months or to request one-time testing. Additionally, other analytical services unrelated to PFAS may also be added as required.

Apart from the analysis service, Kurita Group offers a cost-effective subscription model for PFAS removal and treatment solutions without the need for significant capital investment. This
