Clarivate's 2025 Report Highlights Key Trademark Filing Trends and Leading Brands

Clarivate's 2025 Report on Trademark Filing Trends

The latest report from Clarivate Plc (NYSE: CLVT), a renowned global provider of transformative intelligence, provides insightful analysis into the trademark filing trends for 2025. The research, which comprehensively assesses ten significant trademark registers across the globe—including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several major Asian markets—reveals key dynamics shaping brand protection strategies worldwide.

This exhaustive report discloses the top 20 largest local and foreign-based trademark portfolios within each of the surveyed regions. Used by trademark attorneys and brand managers, this information helps firms navigate the increasingly challenging landscape of intellectual property (IP) management.

One of the most striking findings indicates that Mainland China continues its reign as the leader in global trademark filings, with an impressive 6.76 million applications registered in 2024, despite a gradual decline in activity over the past three years. Following closely, the United States recorded 566,938 applications, while India is witnessing remarkable growth, having filed over 537,000 applications in the same year—averaging a growth rate of 10% each year for the past decade.

Gordon Samson, President of Intellectual Property at Clarivate, commented, "In a rapidly evolving market, trademark attorneys must remain vigilant to the macro-trends and economic connections influencing local jurisdictions and pivotal trademark initiatives. By embracing the insights shared in our report, brands can optimize their strategies for IP management, reducing risks associated with infringement while capitalizing on new opportunities."

In addition to the leading trademark filing nations, the report identifies prominent brands across the various regions. Notably, several giants—Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, Apple, L'Oréal, Novartis, LG Electronics, and Unilever—consistently ranked among the top trademark portfolio holders, appearing in at least seven out of the ten examined registers. This further emphasizes the importance of brand reputation and trademark registration in safeguarding market position.

Unfortunately, the report highlights concerning trends in three jurisdictions—France, Mainland China, and Japan—where trademark filing activity has experienced persistent decline over the past three years. All three territories concluded 2024 with trademark filings at their lowest levels since 2017, indicating a need for local authorities and businesses to reevaluate their strategies and support for trademark applications.

On a somewhat positive note, Australia has shown recovery in its trademark filing volume, reverting to figures akin to those observed in 2021. This resurgence is primarily attributed to a remarkable 24% increase in trademark applications from foreign-based enterprises in 2024, illustrating the globalized nature of brand development and protection.

The insights derived from the trademark filing trends underscored in this report are not only crucial for businesses invested in trademark registration but also for legal practitioners tasked with protecting these brands. By highlighting both the challenges and opportunities within the realm of intellectual property, Clarivate’s research exemplifies its commitment to supporting brands in optimizing their trademark portfolios.
