June Cataract Awareness Month: An Initiative by Prevent Blindness
In an important move to address a significant public health issue, Prevent Blindness has officially declared June as Cataract Awareness Month. This initiative aims to educate the public about cataracts, a condition recognized as the leading cause of vision impairment globally and the foremost reason for vision loss in the United States.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 20.5 million Americans aged 40 and older are affected by cataracts in one or both eyes, which equates to over 17 percent of this demographic. Understanding what cataracts are and the factors that contribute to their development is crucial as most cataracts tend to form gradually, ultimately hindering one’s vision.
What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts refer to the clouding of the clear lens in the eye. While aging is the primary factor leading to cataract formation, several other causes include:
- - Infections: Certain eye infections can lead to cataracts.
- - Medication: Some medications, particularly steroids, have been known to contribute.
- - Injuries: Physical damage to the eye, including blows or cuts, can trigger cataracts.
- - Environmental Factors: Exposure to extreme heat or radiation, as well as prolonged UV light exposure, could also play a role.
- - Health Conditions: Diseases like diabetes can increase the likelihood of developing cataracts.
Types of Cataracts
There are several types of cataracts, mainly classified as follows:
1.
Age-related: Making up about 95% of cataract cases, these typically develop after age 40.
2.
Congenital: Present at birth, these may arise from infections or inflammation during pregnancy or may be inherited.
3.
Traumatic: Occur due to damage from a hard impact, chemical burns, or even radiation.
4.
Secondary: Result from other diseases, certain medications, or eye-related conditions.
