The Functionality of PathoSearch

Using just a screenshot of a region of interest from a Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) slide, PathoSearch instantly generates a list of comparable diagnosed cases from its extensive reference library. This feature allows pathologists to build and assess differential diagnoses in a matter of minutes. The application proves particularly beneficial for atypical or complex cases, which, despite being a common challenge, account for as much as 20% of a pathologist's workload.

Traditionally, pathologists have relied on textbooks, databases, or external consultations to seek guidance on challenging cases. These methods can be time-consuming and costly, with consultative fees at leading cancer centers ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars per case. As noted by Dr. Simon Schallenberg, an associate professor and pathologist at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, “Obtaining a second opinion on a complex case could take hours when we share images digitally, and even longer if glass samples must be shipped.” With PathoSearch, having access to comparable diagnosed cases immediately allows for better-informed diagnostic decisions right from the start.

Comprehensive Database of Pathology Cases

PathoSearch taps into its unique multicentric reference database, built from collaborations with prestigious institutions such as the Mayo Clinic. Each match retrieved by PathoSearch leads to an actual diagnosed case, meticulously annotated and validated by experienced pathologists, often confirmed with molecular testing. Each comparable case is readily available for review by the pathologist, allowing for direct comparison with their current sample.

Currently, the PathoSearch database is on track to surpass one million whole slide images, with over 310,000 images representing more than 35,000 cases spanning over 300 diagnostic categories and 27 organ types. The database follows the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Tumor Classification, focusing on malignancies, and includes five organ groups: thoracic, digestive, soft tissue, female genital, and male genital and urinary systems. A complete dataset encompassing all WHO-classified malignant neoplasms is expected shortly.

Integration and Accessibility

Aignostics has also made PathoSearch compatible with various image management systems. The first integration is now available within Techcyte Fusion® AP. Pathologists utilizing Fusion can easily reach out to their Techcyte representative to request demonstrations of this new feature.
