Quantum Computing Inc. Makes Groundbreaking Progress in Quantum Photonics



Quantum Computing Inc. (Nasdaq: QUBT), an industry frontrunner in integrated photonics and quantum optics, has announced significant strides forward with the acquisition of its fifth purchase order for its thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonic chip foundry. This noteworthy order originates from a Canadian research team aiming to propel advancements in the field of quantum photonics.

As part of this order, QCi will supply the researchers with custom test structures based on its cutting-edge TFLN photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology. These structures will lay the groundwork for sophisticated designs involving periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) components, integral for the generation of entangled photons and facilitating optical frequency conversion. The agreement with the research group also grants them preferential access and pricing for future multi-project wafer (MPW) runs offered by QCi.

Complementing this latest order, QCi has also introduced its Process Design Kit (PDK), utilizing GDSFactory’s open-source platform. This robust, Python-based tool facilitates the design of intricate systems, including photonic circuits, thereby simplifying the design and manufacturing processes for potential users of QCi’s foundry services. Users will be able to design, simulate, and finalize their circuit blueprints prior to submission for manufacturing, which is expected to streamline upcoming MPW runs.

To further boost accessibility, QCi plans to expand the availability of its PDK over the next two years through various service providers, making it easier for customers within the photonics market to access its advanced technology. Notably, QCi is poised to unveil its PDK at the upcoming SPIE Photonics West 2025, slated to occur from January 28-30 in San Francisco, California, emphasizing its commitment to participating in key industry events.

Beyond securing pre-orders through its Pilot Launch Program, QCi has also disclosed collaborations with a prominent European technical university and a Canadian PIC design firm. Furthermore, the newly established U.S.-based chip foundry in Tempe, Arizona, is set to concentrate on the production of TFLN-based PICs and nanophotonic devices, with operations projected to commence later this quarter. This facility marks a crucial expansion of QCi's capabilities and serves to strengthen its position within the optical chip market, which is experiencing rapid growth.
