New Study Validates Oral Immunotherapy for Food Allergies in Clinical Settings

Advances in Food Allergy Treatment

Latitude Food Allergy Care has recently announced the findings of a groundbreaking study conducted in partnership with Weill Cornell Medicine. This research, which involved over 1,000 patients, aimed to validate the safety and effectiveness of oral immunotherapy (OIT) for treating food allergies. The results are promising, highlighting a remarkable 91% of patients successfully reaching maintenance phase in a clinical setting. These findings will be presented at the upcoming American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) Annual Meeting in San Diego.

Significance of the Findings

Dr. Zahida "Rani" Maskatia, a leading allergist, emphasizes the importance of these results, stating that they reflect the outcomes experienced in real-life clinical practices rather than the controlled conditions of previous research. This study potentially bridges a critical gap in food allergy treatment research, as it highlights how OIT can be integrated into everyday clinical environments.

Key Research Outcomes

The study's results unveil several notable outcomes:
  • - A staggering 91% of patients reached maintenance for at least one food allergen.
  • - Of the evaluated patients, 63% experienced at least one reaction during the treatment process. Among these, 61% were mild reactions, 23% were moderate, and 12.7% classified as severe.
  • - The frequency of reactions represented 5% of all doses administered, with mild reactions accounting for 4.4%.
  • - Common symptoms resulting from reactions included pruritus (36%), mild abdominal pain (34%), and vomiting or diarrhea (22%).
  • - There was a higher incidence of reactions to milk and egg allergens compared to sesame, tree nuts, and peanuts.
  • - Factors associated with increased OIT reactions were lower respiratory comorbidities and the age at which OIT commenced.

Presentation at AAAAI Annual Meeting

The significant findings will be presented under the title, "Factors Associated with Oral Immunotherapy-Related Reactions in Food Allergy Management: Insights from Clinical Practice," during a poster session scheduled for March 1st at 9:45 AM. Leading this presentation will be Eirene Fithian, a medical student from Weill Cornell Medical College, along with Drs. Perdita Permaul and Priya Katari, both pediatric allergists from the same institution.

Poster Details

  • - Poster Number: 433
  • - Location: Convention Center, Ground Level, Hall A

Additionally, clinicians from Latitude Food Allergy Care will be present for Q&A at Booth #855 during the AAAAI/WAO Joint Congress from February 28 to March 3, 2025.
