Discover the Essence of Yuzen Dyeing at Marubeni Gallery: A Cultural Revival Event

Discover the Essence of Yuzen Dyeing

Marubeni Corporation and Hokuhoku Financial Group are co-hosting an enlightening exhibition titled "The Splendor and Delicacy of Yuzen Dyeing: The Marubeni Collection" from August 5 to September 25, 2025, at the Marubeni Gallery. This event follows their joint volunteer efforts in response to the January 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, furthering their commitment to cultural and community support.

Exhibition Overview

This exhibition aims to highlight the rich heritage of Yuzen dyeing, a intricate dyeing technique that originated in the late Edo period of the 17th century. Unlike the more commonly used shibori dyeing methods of the time, Yuzen offered a multitude of vibrant colors and delicate patterns, enhancing the beauty of women's kimono styles known as kosode. As it flourished in the 18th century, Yuzen dyeing evolved with the introduction of synthetic dyes in the Meiji era, transforming once more through the Taisho and Showa periods.

Marubeni Gallery will primarily showcase historical treasures from its collection, including exquisite kosode and Yuzen hanging scrolls created by renowned artists of the Showa era. Visitors can immerse themselves in the evolution of dyeing techniques and the beauty of intricate design that defines this craft.

Admission and Venue

The exhibition will be on display at Marubeni Gallery from August 5 (Tuesday) to September 25 (Thursday), 2025. Visitors can experience the gallery daily from 10 AM to 5 PM (last entry is at 4:30 PM), excluding Sundays, public holidays, and exhibition change days (August 28, 29, and 30). Admission is priced at 500 yen for adults, while students under high school age can enter for free.

In a collaborative effort, both Marubeni Gallery and the Hokuhoku FG-operated Galerie Millet of Hokuriku Bank will also host the "Cultural Weaving Noto Reconstruction Support Exhibition—A Message from Hokuriku." Admission fees from both exhibitions will be entirely donated to support recovery efforts from the Noto earthquake.

Related Exhibition

In tandem with the Yuzen dyeing exhibit, visitors can enjoy another showcase titled "Hokuriku's Passion: Yasuto Inagaki" at the Marubeni Building's first-floor entrance. Prominent photographer Yasuto Inagaki, a resident of Toyama, captures the enchanting landscapes of the Hokuriku region as part of a project aimed at promoting local beauty and culture. This exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating nature, cultural heritage, and daily life of the Hokuriku area, presented in vivid photographs.
