America's Warrior Partnership Recognizes Champion Advocates for Veterans
On April 28, 2025, America's Warrior Partnership (AWP) unveiled the esteemed winners of this year’s Leo K. Thorsness Leadership Award and the President's Award, celebrating individuals whose tireless efforts have significantly improved the circumstances of veterans across the United States. Both awards will be presented during the AWP Awards Gala, set to take place in Washington, DC on May 8, 2025.
A Legacy of Leadership
The Leo K. Thorsness Leadership Award is named in honor of the late Colonel Leo K. Thorsness, a Medal of Honor recipient and one of AWP's founding board members. This award highlights the extraordinary leadership qualities and devoted service of individuals contributing to veteran communities. This year, the award has been bestowed upon
Ken Fisher, noted for his role as co-managing partner of Fisher Brothers and as chairman of the Fisher House Foundation.
Fisher Brothers, a family-owned real estate firm, manages a substantial portfolio exceeding $8.5 billion. Under Fisher's guidance, the
Fisher House Foundation has provided invaluable support to over 534,000 military families, offering free lodging to those receiving care at military and VA medical facilities. The foundation has saved families approximately $650 million in travel costs and has awarded more than $35 million in scholarships, showcasing its commitment to the wellbeing of veterans and their families.
Reflecting upon Fisher’s impact, Jim Lorraine, President and CEO of AWP remarked, "Ken Fisher has been instrumental in fostering a transformative program that significantly enhances the quality of life for military personnel and their families worldwide. Through his initiatives, he has created a series of impactful resources to support the military community, including safe lodging environments for wounded service members during challenging times."
Honoring Humanitarian Efforts
The
President's Award, distinctively selected by Lorraine, acknowledges those exemplary leaders who have made a considerable difference in veteran advocacy. This year's recipient is
Tom Deierlein, a distinguished graduate of West Point and an Airborne Ranger who endured severe injuries during his service in Iraq. As co-founder and CEO of
ThunderCat Technology, a recognized systems integrator, he simultaneously champions veteran issues through the
TD Foundation, which assists the families of wounded veterans and fallen heroes.
"Tom Deierlein embodies compassion in action, demonstrating unwavering commitment through the TD Foundation’s initiatives aimed at supporting veterans and their families in distress," Lorraine stated. "Together, we have been able to swiftly address critical challenges veterans face, offering resources necessary to empower their families and facilitate thriving futures."
Since its founding, the TD Foundation has provided over $350,000 in immediate support for veterans facing urgent financial burdens, a direct reflection of Deierlein's dedication to creating long-term solutions that uplift veteran families.
The Upcoming Gala Celebration
The upcoming AWP Awards Gala represents more than just a celebratory event; it serves as a networking platform designed to connect veterans with organizations that can facilitate their wellbeing and success. The gala underscores the collaborative spirit of the veteran-serving community, empowering them to enhance the quality of life for those who have bravely served the nation.
David J. McIntyre, Jr., President and CEO of TriWest, remarked on the recognition of Fisher and Deierlein: "We are proud to partner with AWP in celebrating the achievements of Mr. Fisher and Mr. Deierlein, whose contributions resonate profoundly within the veteran community."
AWP continues to fulfill its mission as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, striving to prevent veteran suicide and improve the overall quality of life for veterans and their families. By connecting local organizations with resources, AWP enables communities to proactively support veterans in need.
