Authentic Interactions Unveils Digital Likeness Directive for AI Control

Authentic Interactions' Groundbreaking Move Towards Digital Likeness Control

In a bold move to address one of the most complex ethical dilemmas in the world of artificial intelligence, Authentic Interactions (AI Inc) has launched the Digital Likeness Directive (DLD). This innovative framework aspires to provide individuals with ownership over their digital likenesses, ensuring that they can dictate how their identity is recreated by AI technologies both while they are alive and even after their passing.

Understanding the Digital Likeness Directive (DLD)

The Digital Likeness Directive represents a significant development in AI ethics. It seeks to fill the void in the industry regarding consent mechanisms for digital likenesses—thereby enhancing the autonomy of individuals over their own identities. Co-signed by significant entities such as StoryFile, Lookalike.com, and Authentex, the DLD sets forth an open standard designed to simplify the decision-making process for individuals regarding their likenesses.

The DLD consists of two major components:

1. The Directive: A comprehensive record created during a person’s life that delineates the specifics of how they permit their likeness to be used. This includes six areas: the formats of recreation (text, voice, video), stipulations about whether only real recordings can be reconstituted or if AI can generate new content, access permissions, commercial usage rights, source material, and taboo topics. All of these parameters can be documented in a portable format transferrable across platforms that embrace the standard. Individuals may even opt out of any recreations altogether with a single directive.

2. The Takedown Process: This mandates that platforms complying with the DLD must adhere to a 14-day limit to obtain authorization for any real-time recreations or to remove unauthorized ones. If a directive is absent, the standard provides clarity on decision-making authority following existing laws concerning a person’s remains, thus eliminating confusion for families in the aftermath of loss.

This initiative arrives in the context of evolving legal frameworks, such as the recently introduced NO FAKES Act in the U.S. and new European synthetic media regulations. Present laws tend to focus on post-harm liability, often failing to offer real-time protocols for honoring individual wishes at the time of likeness creation or dispute.

A Commitment to Ethical Standards

Alex Quinn, CEO of Authentic Interactions, passionately stated, "We created StoryFile because we believe people should be remembered accurately, on their terms." The DLD promotes the notion that the advancements in AI recreation technology should coincide with equal opportunities for the respective individuals or their families to have a say in the process—be it affirming or denying likeness usage. It amplifies the voices of those whose identities are at stake, rather than allowing unregulated exploitation.

The process of registering a refusal is designed to be user-friendly—free of charge and independent of an ongoing relationship with Authentic Interactions. It necessitates identity verification, ensuring that the data is safeguarded. In addition, the registry does not retain any personal biometrics or likeness data, emphasizing the commitment to privacy and consent. Authentic Interactions is dedicated to publishing lists of platforms adhering to the directive and its associated dispute resolution outcomes, and plans to transfer stewardship of the standard to a neutral organization as its acceptance broadens.

As the DLD moves toward finalization, Authentic Interactions is inviting public feedback on the draft until September 30, 2026. They are actively seeking additional platforms to engage with the DLD framework, encouraging a collective shift towards responsible AI recreation practices.
