A Focus on Memorable Stays

This film festival aims to revitalize the Toi area by transforming it from a mere tourist destination into a place where memories linger. Leveraging landmarks like the breathtaking sunset and the recently opened Terasa Orange Toy, the event aspires to foster connections between locals and visitors alike. As guests gather for a night of films beneath the stars, they will savor not only the movies but also the rich local culture showcased through performances by the Dougasima Kids Dancers and drum groups amidst illuminated beach vistas.

Origins of the Project

Nestled in a region blessed with the magnificent Suruga Bay, stunning sunsets, and abundant hot springs, Toi has a storied past filled with vibrancy thanks to throngs of tourists and community engagement. However, in recent years, challenges such as population decline, aging demographics, and a drop in tourist numbers have led to a loss of communal vitality. A marked decrease in shared cultural experiences and communal spaces has been particularly impactful.

Once home to a beloved cinema, which brought people together through laughter, tears, and shared moments, the closing of this venue created a void in the community. Aiming to reignite this communal spark, we envisioned a place where people could reconnect and share joyous experiences. Thus, the Sunset Cinema Festival was born—an event where locals and visitors can unite over the nostalgia of film watching.

Our Aspirations

The festival seeks to accomplish several goals:
1. Reinvigorate Local Pride: Offer locals a chance to rediscover their love for their community through engaging activities.
2. Showcase Toi’s Charm: Introduce tourists to the unique allure of the Toi region.
3. Cultivate a Living Cultural Legacy: Lay down the foundation for a new cultural experience for the next generation.

With this festival marking the return of a large-scale cinematic event after nearly 40 years, it lays the groundwork for an annual gathering that celebrates film and community.

Crowdfunding Initiative

To bring this vision to life, we are launching a crowdfunding campaign aimed at generating operational funds to support this extraordinary event. Contributors are invited to help promote and share the unique essence of Toi. Rewards for backers include access to VIP seating, homemade gâteau chocolat crafted by the chef at LOQUAT Nishiizu, and additional local specialty gifts.

We are also excited to present the “Hawatto Biwa Soap” made from the leaves of a unique white loquat plant found only in this region, which will be available as a token of gratitude for supporters. This natural soap, crafted in partnership with MIMOSA, is not only popular among visitors but also reflects the beautiful connection between nature and community.

Join Us in Making History

The crowdfunding campaign runs from August 21 to October 8, with a funding target of ¥1,600,000 aimed to cover setup costs and ensure a memorable event for all attendees. Together, we can create something truly special from the resources available within our community!
