Tokyo University Students Bring Okinawa's Charm to the Forefront at 'Yanbaru Yell 5000 Fes'

Introducing the 'Yanbaru Yell 5000 Project' and Fes

On September 5th and 6th, 2026, the picturesque town of Motobu, Okinawa will host the much-anticipated 'Yanbaru Yell 5000 Fes'. Organized by first-year students from Toita Women's Junior College in Tokyo, this event seeks to highlight the魅力と課題 of Okinawa's northern region, known as Yanbaru, and showcase the innovative projects developed by these students in collaboration with local residents, businesses, and stakeholders.

The 'Yanbaru Yell 5000 Project' aims to share the story of Okinawa's northern region with a broader audience while addressing critical challenges such as population decline, promoting local spending by tourists, and encouraging the exploration of the area’s natural beauty. Through hands-on learning experiences, these aspiring young entrepreneurs have conducted in-depth research into Okinawa’s culinary traditions, tourist resources, and the pressing issues facing the region today.

Event Highlights

The festival will feature an array of student-developed products, including the much-loved ‘Motobu Tacos’ that will be sold from a food truck. Importantly, children below high school age can enjoy free cotton candy and shaved ice (while supplies last), which fosters a family-friendly atmosphere.

In addition, a stage event will take place on September 6th, showcasing performances by local artists such as the Okinawan pop group 'Chakarand' and singer 'MARU', who are joining in support of the students' endeavors. Their participation highlights the event's community spirit and commitment to uplifting local culture through music and art.

Upcoming Events Leading to the Festival

Before the main fes, on August 30th, 2026, the students will also hold a demonstration sales event at Riubou Store for an original bento box they created. During this event, they will engage directly with customers to share the inspiration and thought process behind their innovative culinary creation. This event not only serves as a precursor but also reflects the students’ commitment to learning and local flavors.
