Dunwoody College Launches Innovative VR Program for High School Trades Education

Dunwoody College's Groundbreaking Initiative to Inspire Future Skilled Workers

In a groundbreaking move, Dunwoody College of Technology has launched the Dunwoody Immersive program, a dual-credit initiative designed specifically for high school students. This innovative program, kicking off this fall, leverages mixed reality technology to provide students with immersive, hands-on experiences in skilled trades education. The aim is to address the growing skilled trades gap and prepare students for high-demand careers without stepping outside their high school environment.

A First-of-Its-Kind Approach

Dunwoody Immersive represents a unique approach in education, offering college-level coursework integrated with high school schedules. By utilizing virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) technologies, students engage in a curriculum that mixes online learning with interactive lab experiences. This is particularly vital in the current landscape, where a significant workforce shortfall persists; for every five seasoned professionals retiring from skilled trades, only two new entrants are emerging.

A report by the U.S. Department of Education predicts a staggering 2.1 million skilled trades jobs are at risk of remaining unfilled by 2030. The Dunwoody Immersive program recognizes this pressing challenge and seeks to fill the gap by cultivating a new generation of workers who are prepared for careers in fields like advanced manufacturing, construction, robotics, and architecture.

Program Structure and Offerings

The initial semester offers two courses: DC Circuit Fundamentals and Early Global Architecture. These courses will be piloted across six school districts and charter schools including Edina Virtual Pathways, Wayzata Public Schools, and White Bear Lake School District, among others. Each course is crafted to provide pathways into skilled trades education while earning both high school and college credits.

Cindy Olson, Vice President of Enrollment Management at Dunwoody, emphasizes, "We built Dunwoody Immersive because a student's ZIP code shouldn't decide whether they get a shot at a high-paying career in the skilled trades." This sentiment mirrors the broader goal of creating equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their background.

Students participating in Dunwoody Immersive will complete courses ranging from 14 to 16 weeks, utilizing a blend of gamified learning, 2D and 3D visuals, and hands-on labs powered by VR. This unique educational design ensures students grasp complex concepts while experiencing scenarios that would typically require access to expensive equipment and facilities.

Hands-On Learning Experience

The program prioritizes hands-on learning, essential to the ethos of Dunwoody College. Brad Hosack, Chief Operating Officer of Dunwoody Immersive, notes, "This isn't VR for the sake of VR. It's VR because it lets students safely try things they'd never get to do in a real lab." This perspective highlights the program's commitment to practical skill-building that is both engaging and effective.

Dr. Josh Swanson, Superintendent of Eden Prairie Schools, expresses enthusiasm for this partnership, stating, "Our mission is to inspire each student every day... Through Dunwoody Immersive, students can explore fields like DC electricity and architecture, experience college-level learning without leaving campus, and earn college credit along the way."

Industry Collaboration

Industry leaders, such as Angie Wordell, Executive Vice President of Graco, recognize the importance of programs like Dunwoody Immersive. "We're proud to support a program that helps prepare the next generation of skilled workers while reinforcing Minnesota's leadership in technical education and manufacturing," she asserts. This collaboration brings real-world relevance to the classroom experience, connecting students with professionals from various industries and enhancing their educational journeys.

The Future of Education

Dunwoody College of Technology has always been at the forefront of applied education since its inception in 1914. As the only private, not-for-profit technical college in the Upper Midwest, it has transformed the lives of over 200,000 individuals by focusing on hands-on learning across more than 40 majors in fields such as engineering, robotics, and design.

The launch of Dunwoody Immersive reflects Dunwoody College's ongoing commitment to innovation in education and addressing the skills gap in the trades. With programs like this, the college aims to not only inspire students but also equip them with the necessary tools to succeed in an ever-evolving job market.
