Landmark $30 Million Gift to FIU Medicine
In a defining moment for the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University (FIU), philanthropists Helen and Jacob Shaham have pledged a remarkable $30 million. This extraordinary contribution is set to honor their commitment to health care and education by naming the upcoming academic medical center the Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center.
The announcement was made on April 7, 2026, at FIU’s Miami campus, garnering attention from community leaders and stakeholders in medical education. The Shahams expressed their pride in supporting an institution that plays a crucial role in shaping the future of medical professionals and enhancing accessibility to high-quality healthcare in South Florida.
“We are proud to support FIU’s College of Medicine and the role it plays in our community,” Helen Shaham stated during the announcement. “Expanding access to education and preparing the next generation of physicians is a meaningful investment in the future.”
The academic medical center, which is currently under construction, is being built in collaboration with Baptist Health South Florida. This partnership will ensure that the center operates with a continuous focus on providing excellent medical care and education. Scheduled to open in 2028, the facility will span seven stories and include state-of-the-art academic learning spaces along with outpatient multi-specialty services, such as same-day surgery and diagnostic imaging.
The significance of this investment is further highlighted by the Florida Legislature, which has contributed over $158 million to FIU Medicine thus far. This support underlines the critical need for expanded medical education and services in a landscape where the U.S. is grappling with a notable doctor shortage.
“Today marks a monumental occasion in the history of Florida International University,” declared Jeanette M. Nuñez, President of FIU. “The Shahams’ extraordinary generosity will elevate the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine to new heights and accelerate our vision for a world-class academic health center.”
The Shahams are not new to philanthropy. With their extensive experience in senior living, they have launched The Palace, recognized nationally for its exemplary model in senior care communities. Their commitment extends beyond just this donation; they actively mentor FIU alumni and support various health institutions including Baptist Health and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, both of which are key partnerships for FIU Medicine.
Carlos A. Duart, Chair of FIU's Board of Trustees, commented on the transformative gift by stating, “This reflects the Shahams' vision and confidence in FIU’s expanding role within our community. The Academic Medical Center will not only broaden access to health care but will also foster advancements in education and research that benefit South Florida as a whole.”
Dr. Juan C. Cendan, Dean of FIU Medicine, expressed gratitude for the unrestricted nature of the donation. He noted, “This gift lets us prioritize what truly matters—our students, scientific innovation, and the delivery of top-tier healthcare. By enhancing scholarship opportunities, we can empower talented individuals who can better serve our communities.”
The Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center aims to create an environment where education, research, and patient care converge. It stands as a beacon for academic medicine and compassionate health care. This investment not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also ensures future generations of physicians and scientists will be equipped to improve health outcomes.
In essence, the Shahams’ contribution is poised to reshape the landscape of medical education and health care access, ensuring a lasting impact that extends far beyond the boundaries of their immediate vision. As FIU prepares to welcome this monumental addition, the excitement is palpable, underscoring the university's commitment to innovation and excellence in healthcare education.
