Tetsuya Komuro Joins AI School Song Project

Tetsuya Komuro, the CEO of Pavilions Inc. and SOUND PORT Co., Ltd., has embarked on an innovative journey as a guest chief researcher at the RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligent Project. In this role, he contributes to a groundbreaking project that involves using artificial intelligence (AI) to create a school song for the newly established Kuwana City Tado Academy, set to open in April 2026 in Mie Prefecture.

Project Overview

The initiative is driven by a research team under the leadership of Director Masatoshi Hamanaka at RIKEN. The project aims to develop a school song that embodies the spirit and vision of this new integrated school for elementary and junior high school students. Tetsuya Komuro's involvement centers on selecting the most suitable song from four AI-generated compositions, showcasing a fusion of technology and music.

Production Process

The creation of the school song is divided into several key steps:

1. Lyric Generation: Utilizing an AI model that generates lyrics based on specific keywords. The process involves a collaboration between AI and human editors to enhance the quality of the lyrics iteratively.

2. Composition: A system was developed where melodies suggested by AI are incorporated into songs drafted by human composers. This collaborative approach allowed children from Kuwana City to engage in the creative process using AI tools to produce musical materials.

3. Final Selection: The harmonization of the lyrics and melodies underwent analysis using AI technology from Kyushu University, leading to the refinement of four candidate songs. Ultimately, Tetsuya Komuro participated in the final selection process, choosing the piece that best fits the school's identity.

  • - RIKEN: Oversaw the project and developed the AI composition system.
  • - Kyushu University: Analyzed the harmony of lyrics and melodies using AI technology.
  • - Tokyo University of the Arts: Finalized the candidate songs through professional composition.
  • - Students at Kuwana City Tado Academy: Created musical materials using the AI system, bringing young voices into the mix.
