Unveiling Star Hill Farm Whisky
Maker's Mark Distillery, renowned for its iconic bourbon, has taken a bold step forward by introducing
Star Hill Farm Whisky, a unique offering that marks its first new mashbill and the first wheat whisky in the distillery’s illustrious 70-year history.
A Celebration of Regenerative Agriculture
This innovative spirit aims to celebrate the significance of regenerative agriculture, which is vital for enhancing soil health and improving flavors, leading to a sustainable future in the whisky industry. Scheduled for an annual release, Star Hill Farm Whisky will initially be available in the United States and the United Kingdom, with plans to expand to Australia later in 2025.
As part of Maker's Mark's commitment to sustainability, the distillery has announced the formation of
The Maker's Mark Regenerative Alliance, aiming to transition one million acres of conventional farmland to regenerative practices within the next three years. This effort underscores a growing recognition of the importance of sustainable agricultural methods in producing exceptional spirits.
A Journey of Innovation
Rob Samuels, the eighth-generation whisky maker and managing director of Maker's Mark, expressed pride in introducing Star Hill Farm Whisky, which represents a decade of dedicated efforts to capture the essence of nature’s flavors. He states, “The launch of Star Hill Farm Whisky will expand our platform to advance regenerative agriculture beyond our business...”
This release signifies Maker's Mark's evolution beyond traditional practices, as it shifts from its longstanding mashbill. The inaugural edition highlights the soft red winter wheat, a distinct grain for the distillery, entirely replacing corn. This year’s blend combines two unique mashbills: one consisting of 70% soft red winter wheat and 30% malted barley, and the other composed entirely of malted soft red winter wheat.
The Flavor Profile
The master distiller, Dr. Blake Layfield, describes the 2025 release as a meticulously crafted blend of seven- and eight-year-old whiskies, showcasing a striking balance of flavors. The whisky is bottled at cask strength, boasting an ABV of
57.35% (114.7 proof). Upon tasting, drinkers can expect an enticing aroma of buttery caramel, golden raisins, and gingerbread, leading to palate notes that include honeyed toffee, chocolate-covered cherries, and a subtle hint of apple pie spice. The finish promises to be smooth and inviting, adorned with toasted pecans and gentle cinnamon.
Land Legacy and Partnerships
Star Hill Farm Whisky derives its name from the 1,100-acre property that serves as home to Maker's Mark Distillery, chosen for its extraordinary water source and accessibility to local grain growers. As part of its mission, Maker's Mark actively protects and enhances its watershed and surrounding lands. They have also achieved significant accolades in sustainability, becoming the first bourbon distillery in Kentucky to earn
B Corp Certification, as well as the first globally to obtain certification from
Regenified™, a leader in regenerative certification.
In conjunction with the launch of Star Hill Farm Whisky, the distillery is collaborating with Regenified and
Understanding Ag, an organization that focuses on building healthy farm ecosystems through education and technical support. Their initiative invites farms, bars, and restaurants primarily located in New York, Kentucky, and greater London to participate in adopting regenerative practices.
Estate Whiskey Certification
For the first time, Star Hill Farm Whisky will feature
Estate Whiskey certification, a new designation highlighting local sourcing and sustainable production processes in the whisky sector. Estate whiskey is produced exclusively on-site at the distillery, utilizing grains sourced from lands directly owned or controlled by Maker's Mark.
With a suggested retail price of
$100, this limited release will be accessible at select retailers across the United States, as well as available directly at the Maker's Mark Distillery through a guided experience. To learn more and to secure a Star Hill Farm Whisky experience, enthusiasts can visit
