Moldova Hosts the 46th World Congress of Vine and Wine in 2025

The 46th World Congress of Vine and Wine in Moldova

In a historic moment for Moldova, the 46th World Congress of Vine and Wine will be held for the very first time in this vibrant nation, known for having the highest vineyard density per capita in the world. With an astounding four hectares of vineyard per 100 residents, Moldova boasts nearly 110,000 hectares dedicated to vine cultivation. This remarkable statistic places it among the top 20 wine-producing countries globally and ranks Moldova as the 14th largest wine exporter.

In 2024 alone, the country exported an impressive 144 million liters of wine valued at over $234 million. Moldovan wines find their way to 73 nations, with half of these exports directed towards European markets. Wine in Moldova is not merely a commodity; it weaves itself into the fabric of national identity, history, and economy. Over the past few years, the wine sector has experienced significant growth, driven by improved quality and bolstered tourism infrastructure.

Today, Moldova is home to over 250 wineries, each offering visitors a remarkable selection of wines paired with unforgettable experiences. The nation has built a strong reputation in the international wine community, not just due to its unique terroir and storied traditions but also through increasing recognition over the last few decades. In fact, Moldovan wines have secured thousands of medals at elite international competitions, including the Berlin Wine Trophy and the Decanter World Wine Awards, further establishing the country as a reputable producer of quality wines on the global stage.

A pivotal milestone in promoting Moldovan wines has been the establishment of the National Office of Vine and Wine (ONVV) and the launch of the national branding initiative 'Wine of Moldova – Unexpectedly Great' in 2013. This image has significantly contributed to enhancing the profile of Moldovan wines abroad.

Scheduled to take place from June 16 to June 20, 2025, the World Congress will unfold at the majestic Palace of the Republic in Chișinău, attracting around 300 specialists, researchers, winemakers, oenologists, producers, and policymakers from 51 member countries of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). Discussions will focus on the future of the global wine industry, with participants having the opportunity to partake in 13 technical tours at some of Moldova’s most distinguished wineries. The event will culminate with a festive dinner at Cricova, the renowned underground wine city, celebrated for its extensive tunnels and exceptional wines.

Event participation packages can be booked through the official Congress website here. This gathering is organized by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of Moldova and the National Office for Vine and Wine (ONVV). Notably, Moldova became a member of the OIV on April 3, 2001, marking it as the first country from the CIS to join this esteemed organization. As OIV prepares to celebrate its centenary in 2024, the Congress in Moldova signifies a vital beginning of its second century, representing an exciting chapter for viticulture and wine appreciation both locally and globally.
