Brooklyn Center's Inaugural Liberian Independence Day Parade: A Cultural Milestone

Brooklyn Center's Inaugural Liberian Independence Day Parade

The city of Brooklyn Center is set to make history on July 26, 2025, with the first Liberian Independence Day Parade in Minnesota. Organized by the We Are Liberian organization, the event is a celebration of cultural pride, resilience, and the contributions of the Liberian community and other ethnic groups in the state.

As one of the largest Liberian populations in the United States, Minnesota has become a hub for Liberians, particularly after a significant influx that followed the civil war in Liberia over three decades ago. According to the organizers, this parade is not just a festive gathering—it is a moment of recognition for a community that has thrived in a new land.

The parade will kick off at 11:00 AM on Shingle Creek Parkway and will proceed towards Centennial Park, where a day filled with festivities awaits. Attendees can look forward to a vibrant array of activities, including cultural dancers dressed in traditional attire, performances by local artists, and the presence of community organizations and leaders who embody the spirit of collaboration and diversity.

With over 70 vendors, food trucks offering culinary delights, and entertainment options for families, the parade aims to create a festive atmosphere that reflects the richness of Liberian culture and the broader African diaspora.

Marie Dweh, the founder of We Are Liberian, shared her personal journey, stating, “For a long time, I didn't see myself represented. I felt too American at home and too Liberian at school. Today, that same generation is becoming the teachers, lawyers, and entrepreneurs shaping our future. This parade is a tribute to that journey.” Her reflection underlines the importance of representation and the ongoing evolution of identity.

This inaugural parade is expected to attract thousands of participants and spectators from across the Midwest, marking a significant milestone not just for Brooklyn Center but for Minnesota as it continues to evolve as a cultural hub for Liberians and other communities. The anticipated turnout and engagement highlight the pride and connection that individuals feel toward their heritage and the recognition it deserves.

As the date approaches, excitement is building within the African diaspora, and contributions from various local organizations signal the collective spirit that has characterized the growth of the community. The We Are Liberian organization invites everyone to participate and join in this momentous occasion of unity, celebration, and future possibilities.
