The Launch of the Masakiyo Matsuoka Re-Edit Project
In memory of Masakiyo Matsuoka, the founder of editorial engineering, the Editorial Engineering Institute based in Setagaya, Tokyo, will kick off the "Masakiyo Matsuoka Re-Edit Project" on August 12, 2025, marking his first death anniversary. This initiative aims to re-edit Matsuoka's writings and lecture videos to open new pathways of knowledge for future generations. Alongside this project, the offices linked to Matsuoka and other associated entities will also unveil their upcoming publications and exhibition plans.
Project Overview
The Re-Edit Project aims to inherit Matsuoka's ideas and methodologies, reflecting on a changing world characterized by the rise of AI, complex international dynamics, and environmental crises. Editorial engineering, which views various phenomena as opportunities for information editing, becomes increasingly relevant in contemporary discourse. This initiative will encompass multiple facets, such as publishing collected lecture transcripts, restructuring archival research materials, and focusing on educational implementations.
Project 1: Publishing Collected Lecture Transcripts
One of the most exciting endeavors involves compiling and publishing the extensive list of Matsuoka's lecture transcripts by summer 2026. Known for his dynamic storytelling, Matsuoka has influenced many through his engaging lectures. This book aims to broaden the audience who experiences Matsuoka's teachings, ensuring that his wisdom and experiences are accessible to many beyond firsthand interactions.
Project 2: Enhanced Edition of "The History of Information"
The second focus is the editorial work on the enhanced edition of "The History of Information 21", which Matsuoka originally oversaw. This book chronicles humanity's evolution through the lens of information editing, showcasing its progress from prehistoric communication to the innovations of the digital age. As a continuation of this work, a game version will also be developed to facilitate enjoyable learning environments in both educational and business settings.
Project 3: Connecting Exploratory Research with OPERA PROJECT
The OPERA PROJECT, which began in the 1990s under Matsuoka's leadership, aimed to collect and analyze stories from around the world for insights applicable in business and education. This project will revisit its outcomes by integrating recent story research, thereby assessing the potential application of narrative structures in contemporary society, culminating in anticipated publications by 2026.
Project 4: ISIS Editing School’s Public Events
The ISIS Editing School, led by Matsuoka, will also open some of its internal events to the public, including sessions that focus on discussions intertwined with expert guest lectures. These sessions will allow deeper engagement with Matsuoka's past teachings and their contemporary relevance, providing a space for collaborative learning and interpretation.
Activities from Masakiyo Matsuoka’s Office
In parallel with these projects, Masakiyo Matsuoka's office is planning various events and publications, including musical gatherings where invited artists share their experiences and compositions linked to Matsuoka. The first gathering will begin in June 2025 and will continue monthly until January 2026, featuring several notable musicians.
Additional Publications and Activities
Several new titles related to Matsuoka's work will be released, including a visual guide and a collection of essays. These publications, scheduled for release during the book fair and various events, will celebrate Matsuoka's contributions and philosophy while engaging broader audiences through diverse formats.
As the world evolves with unprecedented challenges, the Re-Edit Project stands to contribute significantly to rediscovering and revitalizing knowledge. By reassessing Matsuoka's innovative approaches, we are challenged to rethink how we handle information, ultimately aiming to foster wisdom for a new era.
