Celebrating 100 Days of Progress at SafeSport
On May 12, 2026, Benita Fitzgerald Mosley, the CEO of the U.S. Center for SafeSport and an LA84 Olympic Gold Medalist, commemorated her first 100 days in office. She stepped into her role on February 1, 2026, and since then, she has been committed to laying the groundwork for the future of athlete safety and well-being in the United States.
Engaging with Stakeholders
During her initial days, Mosley prioritized the feedback of athletes and stakeholders. Her efforts included launching a nationwide listening tour to gather input from various groups affected by athlete safety issues. Additionally, she conducted an internal cultural audit to help shape a new strategic plan aimed at enhancing the organization's functions and outreach.
Highlights of this engagement effort entail:
- - A Nationwide Listening Tour: Mosley embarked on a journey across the country to hear from athletes, coaches, and parents about their experiences and concerns related to safety in Olympic and Paralympic sports. This grassroots approach fosters trust and transparency, allowing the Center to tailor its policies to the needs of the community.
- - Cultural Audit: The internal audit was designed to evaluate the organization's current culture surrounding safety and inclusion. Mosley believes that understanding the internal dynamics is crucial for establishing a more effective and empowering environment for all athletes.
International Collaboration
Coinciding with the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Italy, Mosley organized two international symposia focused on athlete safeguarding. These symposia aimed to drive discussions on best practices and enable collaborations among experts in sports and safeguarding. Such international engagements not only raise awareness but also build a network of champions for ethical practices in sports on a global scale.
Advocacy and Policy Development
In her discussions with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., Mosley addressed the increasing need for robust safeguarding programs. By advocating for higher standards of athlete protection, she aims to elevate the Center's vision and mission. This lobbying aligns with national efforts to ensure that athletes participate in safe, supportive environments, diminishing the risks of abuse and misconduct.
Mosley emphasized, “I was committed to hitting the ground running from day one. Strengthening the athlete safeguarding system in our nation is a marathon—not a sprint. It’s a collaborative process, underscored by our commitment to the voices we serve.”
Upcoming Plans
Mosley is set to unveil the 2026-2028 Strategic Plan on June 23, coinciding with World Olympic and Paralympic Day. This plan will be revealed through a virtual forum titled
