Major Collaborative Project to Launch Japanese Romance Fantasy Manga in North America by 2026

A New Era for Romance Fantasy Manga in North America

In a groundbreaking initiative set to reshape the landscape of manga in North America, three prominent Japanese companies—Libalent, NTT Solmare, and NTT Docomo—have announced a collaborative project tailored for fans of the romance fantasy genre. Officially launching in March 2026, this ambitious project aims to localize and introduce around 100 volumes of Japanese 'Romance Fantasy' manga into the English-speaking market through the largest digital manga distribution store in the United States, MangaPlaza.

The growing popularity of the romance and fantasy fusion genre, aptly termed 'Romantasy', has recently started gaining traction in North America. Yet, despite its rise in popularity, many captivating works from Japan's manga scene have remained relatively unexplored in foreign markets. The joint effort led by MangaPlaza, alongside the S&L Publishing label formed by NTT Docomo and Libalent, is a direct response to this gap.

Key to the project's success, Libalent will take charge of a comprehensive array of responsibilities, including work selection, rights procurement, translation, and typesetting. On the other hand, the MangaPlaza platform will focus on distribution and promotional efforts. Meanwhile, NTT Docomo's extensive resources will bolster the project's structural framework, ensuring a smooth and efficient approach to bringing these Japanese stories to North American audiences.

By collaborating closely with domestic publishers and creators, the trio aims to bring approximately 100 English-translated volumes to the market in 2026, enhancing the visibility of Japanese authors and creators in one of the world's largest content markets. This effort not only hopes to expand the Romance Fantasy community in North America but also seeks to create new market opportunities and value for the content industry, ultimately benefiting Japanese creators and their work.

MangaPlaza is at the forefront of this initiative, boasting partnerships with over 120 publishers, including notable names like Kodansha, KADOKAWA, and Shogakukan. It offers an extensive library of more than 160,000 titles across various genres, including youth, female-focused narratives, Boys' Love (BL), and Teens' Love (TL). Many of these captivating stories are exclusive to the MangaPlaza platform, and approximately 30,000 titles are part of a subscription program that allows unlimited reading for just $6.99 a month, also offering points for premium purchases. This model is designed to foster new connections between diverse audiences and engaging manga content.

Introduction to S&L Publishing

Launched in December 2025, S&L Publishing represents a significant step forward for NTT Docomo and Libalent, aiming to tactfully localize and distribute Japanese digital publishing content to global audiences. Since the inception of the label, nine manga titles have already been translated into English, demonstrating a promising start.
