Upcoming SBI Art Auction: Modern Legacy and Bloom Now Features Major Contemporary Works

Exciting Art Events Ahead: SBI Art Auction 2026

On March 14 and 15, 2026, SBI Art Auction Co., Ltd., located in Koto-ku, Tokyo, will host two remarkable events: the 77th SBI Art Auction titled Modern Legacy: An Important Japanese Collection of 20th & 21st Century Masters on March 14 (Saturday) and the 78th SBI Art Auction Bloom Now on March 15 (Sunday). These auctions promise to be a highlight in the contemporary art calendar.

During this period, attendees can enjoy not only the auctions but also various engaging activities. A special showcase of art books curated by twelvebooks will be on display, featuring selections inspired by the auction line-up. Additionally, a talk event focusing on the renowned artist Tsuguharu Foujita, known for his piece Portrait of Eileen Frank, will be held. Another exciting component of the event includes a pop-up exhibition in the plaza, along with a stamp rally designed to encourage participants to explore multiple exhibition locations.

Highlights of the Auction

The Modern Legacy auction will spotlight significant works from both Japanese and international masters, while the Bloom Now auction will present a diverse selection of contemporary pieces. This year's event aims to do more than just sell art; it’s an opportunity to dive deep into the cultural narratives and artistic movements that shape our visual landscape.

Before the auctions, there will be a preview event showcasing the featured works. Two standout pieces, James Rosenquist’s Untitled and Yoshimasa Saito’s Work 1, are generating significant interest. Accompanying these artworks are introductory videos designed to enhance the viewing experience.

Special Events and Engagement

The upcoming months will also feature exciting dialogue sessions, such as a discussion held on January 29, 2026, titled Perspectives on the Market/Critical Viewpoints—Dialogues on the Modern Legacy Sale. Esteemed critic Okihara Minami will lead the conversation surrounding the auction's conceptual underpinnings, contributing to a richer understanding of collecting and art valuation.

The importance of artist Tsuguharu Foujita will be emphasized during the talk event Essential Stories about Foujita—Footprints, Brush Strokes, and People on March 14, 2026. This session will delve into Foujita's legacy and his connections with peers in the modern artistic canon, reinforcing the relevance of collection practices in today’s art discourse.

Engaging with Art Books

Alongside the auctions, twelvebooks will be introducing a bespoke collection of art books related to the auction themes. This selection aims to deepen attendees' appreciation of the artists and their works. These books provide valuable insights into contemporary artistic expressions and the interconnectedness of various art movements. The preview event serves as a great starting point for art enthusiasts looking to enhance their collections.

SBI Art Auction Co., Ltd. is dedicated to enriching the art community not just through the auctions themselves but by creating a cultural hub for discussions, exploration, and engagement with art.
