Rainforest Alliance Unveils Regenerative Agriculture Certification for Coffee Production

Today marks a significant milestone for sustainability in agriculture as the Rainforest Alliance introduces its Regenerative Agriculture Standard, tailored specifically for coffee producers. This innovative certification aims to foster more resilient farming practices, aiding in both environmental restoration and the well-being of farming communities. As the demand for sustainable coffee grows, this certification promises to deliver a science-backed approach, enabling farmers to monitor and enhance soil health and biodiversity effectively.

Beginning in early 2026, products that comply with this certification will boast a distinctive seal, signaling to consumers their commitment to nurturing the land and supporting local communities. Initially available for coffee, the certification will soon expand to encompass other crops such as cocoa, citrus, and tea, further broadening its impact on global agricultural practices.

In light of pressing agricultural challenges due to extreme weather events and environmental degradation, this new standard arrives at a crucial time. The livelihoods of coffee farmers, particularly smallholders who account for over 70% of global coffee production, are increasingly threatened by these factors. According to Santiago Gowland, CEO of the Rainforest Alliance, "It’s time for the agricultural industry to shift from a 'do no harm' perspective to one that actively seeks to repair and restore. Now, every cup of coffee can contribute positively to the land and its caretakers."

Regenerative agriculture is redefining modern farming as it integrates practices that improve the ecosystem while enhancing farmers' income, potentially increasing earnings by up to 30%. The Rainforest Alliance has developed a comprehensive framework that evaluates progress across five critical areas: soil health and fertility, climate resilience, biodiversity, water stewardship, and overall livelihoods. Through ongoing assessments by independent auditors, farms demonstrating compliance will receive certification, enabling them to proudly display the Rainforest Alliance regenerative seal on their products.

For companies, sourcing coffee certified by the Rainforest Alliance represents a forward-thinking investment in sustainability. Such partnerships not only strengthen supply chains against climate-related shocks but also allow brands to substantiate their environmental claims with credible data, amplifying their engagement with eco-conscious consumers. The regenerative seal provides buyers with the confidence that their purchases support ethical farming practices and environmental stewardship.

Currently, implementation is underway in coffee farms across Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Nicaragua. As companies prepare to roll out their first Rainforest Alliance certified regenerative coffee products on shelves in 2026, there is an open invitation for farmers and businesses to embark on their regenerative journeys. The Rainforest Alliance encourages all stakeholders to explore the certification requirements and begin preparation for this transformative approach to agriculture.
