Kamogawa Sea World, a premier marine attraction located in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, is introducing a breathtaking new exhibit featuring the Andon jellyfish, a species notorious for its potent sting.

Opening at the famous Kurage Life exhibit, the Andon jellyfish (scientific name: Carybdea brevipedalia) brings both allure and caution to the summer season. Known for its delicate, translucent square-shaped umbrella and long, flowing tentacles, the Andon jellyfish can grow to over 30 cm in length. This small jellyfish typically appears along the Boso Peninsula from early summer through autumn, particularly during the Obon holiday when beachgoers might encounter it.

Understanding the Andon Jellyfish

The name "Andon" is derived from traditional Japanese lanterns, which its umbrella shape resembles. This jellyfish is not only beautiful but also dangerous, possessing strong venom that can cause injuries to unsuspecting swimmers. To responsibly collect these jellyfish, local fishers use a method that involves shining lights at night, attracting the jellyfish without harming them, and carefully gathering them with a scoop.

This year, a successful collection of 150 specimens took place on July 23 from a fishing port facing Tokyo Bay, allowing visitors to experience this captivating creature in a controlled environment.

At the Kurage Life exhibit, guests can learn more about the Andon jellyfish alongside various other jellyfish species, including the common moon jellyfish and American sea nettle. The exhibit features around ten different types of jellyfish, displaying their unique biological traits and behaviors. It also employs digital technologies to recreate the intriguing life cycle of these marine invertebrates, enhancing visitor interaction and understanding.
