IREX Welcomes New Faces to the Board of Governors

IREX, a prominent global nonprofit organization, recently made headlines with the announcement of three new appointments to its Board of Governors. The organization, dedicated to fostering leaders and expanding educational access across the globe, welcomed Steve Carey, Christopher Chibwana, and Jeff Krilla. Each newcomer brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to IREX’s mission.

Meet the New Board Members

Steve Carey

Steve Carey, the chair and founder of Potomac Strategic Development, has joined the Board. With over three decades of experience in federal programs and projects, Carey has established a reputation as a key player on Capitol Hill. His past roles include legislative director on the House Appropriations Committee and legislative assistant for significant health and education subcommittees.

His expertise in business development and advocacy creates vital links between industry and government, making him a significant asset to IREX, particularly in enhancing strategic partnerships for future initiatives.

Christopher Chibwana

Joining him is Chris Chibwana, a program officer at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, where he manages grants that support evidence-informed policymaking and empower women economically across Africa. Chibwana’s focus on strengthening institutions ensures that civic organizations can utilize data to create effective policies, ultimately aiming to improve economic opportunities and social trust within communities. His experience will be instrumental in furthering IREX’s goals in education and leadership.

Jeff Krilla

Jeff Krilla, vice president of Global Public Policy at Kosmos Energy, rounds out the trio. A decorated diplomat and veteran, Krilla brings significant experience, having led high-level U.S. delegations and formed partnerships focused on sustainable development around the world. Co-founding the Krilla Kaleiwahea Foundation, he has actively contributed to disaster recovery efforts, notably in his home state of Hawaii after the recent wildfires. His lifelong commitment to community rebuilding will offer IREX invaluable insights into humanitarian initiatives, further enriching its programming.

Strategic Directions Ahead

Ambassador David Gross, chair of the IREX Board of Governors, expressed his excitement about the new appointments, emphasizing the diverse skill sets and knowledge that all three members bring to the table. “Their unique backgrounds and experience will provide critical guidance for IREX’s mission,” he stated. “They understand the importance of education, youth engagement, and leadership in creating real-world benefits for people globally.”

IREX president and CEO Aleksander Dardeli echoed this optimism, noting that the evolving structure of the Board is intentional, aimed at better addressing the complex challenges faced in today’s global landscape. With insights from board members who have deep connections in Africa and expertise across various sectors, IREX is looking to navigate the multifaceted policy environments it operates within more effectively.
