Empowering Women Veterans: PVA Launches Leadership Alliance at 2026 Retreat
Paralyzed Veterans of America Launches New Leadership Alliance
The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) successfully concluded its eighth annual Women Veterans Empowerment Retreat in Orlando, Florida, from September 26 to 28, 2026. This inspiring multi-day event brought together over 40 women veterans from across the United States, focusing on their holistic well-being and empowerment amidst the challenges faced by those living with spinal cord injuries and diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The retreat featured notable appearances, including award-winning filmmaker Ariana Vargas, known for her impactful storytelling, and retired NASA astronaut Wendy Lawrence. Their presence undoubtedly added a touch of inspiration to the event, encouraging the women veterans to embrace their narratives of resilience and strength.
A key highlight of this year’s retreat was the launch of the Women Veterans Leadership Alliance, a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to equipping women veterans with the necessary tools and resources to become leaders and advocates for individuals with disabilities throughout the nation. This program aims to extend PVA's influence from rural towns to metropolitan areas, fostering a nationwide movement. As U.S. Air Force veteran and PVA National Senior Vice President Tammy Jones articulated, the retreat is more than just a getaway; it’s a carefully crafted platform for women veterans to rediscover their voices, build confidence, and connect with their communities.
Interactive sessions were led by Vargas, who not only provided motivational insights but also participated in discussions about the importance of inclusivity in society. Participants engaged in various workshops focused on leadership development, advocacy training, and team-building activities specifically tailored for women veterans. Each attendee and their caregiver left with a fresh look, thanks to a makeover sponsored by L'Oréal USA, which included professional headshots aimed at enhancing their self-image and confidence.
Vargas reflected on the experience, stating, "Every single woman here has a story of survival, resilience, and hope. It was profoundly moving to witness these women embrace the power of shared storytelling. I eagerly anticipate continuing my collaboration with PVA to amplify their voices far beyond this gathering."
The retreat culminated in an induction ceremony celebrating the newly launched Women Veterans Leadership Alliance. Wendy Lawrence shared her remarkable journey, from being the first female graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy to flying into space on four missions. Her presence served to remind attendees of the unlimited possibilities that come with resilience and leadership.
Amy Patterson, a Marine Corps veteran and PVA member, expressed her gratitude, stating, "The Women Veterans Empowerment Retreat was the first opportunity where I could see myself stepping back into a leadership role post-military service. The Women Veterans Leadership Alliance provides us with year-round skills and resources to maintain that role."
In alignment with this mission, the retreat was introduced shortly after PVA launched its One-Of-One campaign, highlighting the organization's commitment to supporting veterans with spinal cord injuries while championing the rights of all individuals with disabilities. By fostering an empowered community of women veterans, PVA aims to create significant change in society, raising awareness and serving as an inspiration for others.
This year’s empowering retreat was made possible through the generous sponsorship of notable organizations, including Gallagher, L'Oréal USA, and Humana Military, among others.
