New Features Launched by NABP for Product Verification Service Enhance Pharmacy Safety

NABP Enhances Product Verification Services

In a significant move to improve product safety within the pharmacy sector, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) has unveiled new enhancements to its Pulse by NABP Product Verification Service (PVS) at the recent 122nd NABP Annual Meeting. This upgraded platform is currently utilized by over 150 regulatory bodies to detect illegitimate products circulating in the pharmacy supply chain.

What's New in Pulse PVS?

The latest updates to the Pulse PVS aim to facilitate enhanced communication and streamline various processes for regulators. Here are some of the key features introduced:

1. Instant Field Verification - This feature allows users to scan products directly in the field, providing immediate verification of a product's status based on its identifier. This quick access is essential for promptly addressing any potential issues with pharmaceutical products.

2. Rapid Investigation Tools - The new system simplifies the querying process, allowing regulators to receive quick resolutions rather than enduring prolonged periods of cross-referencing data. This efficiency can significantly reduce the time needed to respond to potential threats in the supply chain.

3. Direct Supply Chain Connectivity - With a comprehensive directory of verified trading partners, the Pulse PVS enables regulators to quickly locate and communicate with the appropriate contacts. This feature aids in the efficient sharing of product scan results within agencies, bolstering collaborative efforts to ensure safety.

4. Enhanced Law Enforcement Support - The service allows regulators to link suspicious medications to specific criminal events, such as pharmacy break-ins. This connection can provide valuable evidence that strengthens legal cases against those responsible for introducing counterfeit or unsafe medications into the market.

Dr. Lemrey "Al" Carter, the executive director of NABP, emphasized the critical role of Pulse PVS in safeguarding public health. He stated, "Since its launch, Pulse PVS has been a reliable tool in the supply chain to protect public health. Regulators have scanned thousands of units to identify unsafe, counterfeit, and unapproved drugs, removing them from the drug supply chain before they reach patients."

Focus on Independent Pharmacies

As part of its ongoing initiative to enhance pharmacy safety, NABP began onboarding chain pharmacies into the Pulse platform and is now shifting its attention to independent pharmacies. By ensuring these smaller dispensers have access to the Pulse PVS before the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) deadline in November 2026, NABP aims to simplify compliance with this crucial regulation and further the collective goal of protecting patients across the pharmaceutical landscape.

About Pulse by NABP

Pulse is designed to be an inclusive, accessible, and secure digital platform that simplifies the journey towards achieving DSCSA compliance for regulators, trading partners, and their associated software providers. Offering user-friendly tools and a network of verified relationships, Pulse ensures consistent communication among trusted trading partners of all sizes within the supply chain.
