Marchesi Frescobaldi Launches Gorgona 2025: A Wine Born from Rehabilitation and Nature

Marchesi Frescobaldi Presents Gorgona 2025

On June 12, 2026, Lamberto Frescobaldi, the President of Marchesi Frescobaldi, celebrated the launch of Gorgona 2025, a remarkable wine cultivated on Gorgona Island, Europe's last active penal colony. This vintage not only highlights the exquisite terroir of its origin but also the transformative journey of the inmates who produce it.

Since 2012, a unique collaboration between Marchesi Frescobaldi and the Gorgona Penitentiary Institute has turned grape-growing into a pathway for rehabilitation. Inmates nearing the end of their sentences engage deeply in viticulture, developing practical skills in the vineyard and cellar with guidance from seasoned agronomists and winemakers. Lamberto Frescobaldi emphasized the project’s significance, stating, "Entering prison alters one’s perception of time; days blend together, and hopeful anticipation becomes elusive. In stark contrast, the vineyard breathes life into the days. Each vine demands care and attention, providing inmates a genuine and human sense of time. This project, now at its fourteenth harvest, embodies our commitment to restore dignity and hope to these individuals."

The island of Gorgona serves not only as a picturesque amphitheater overlooking the sea but also as a fertile learning ground. The vineyard comprises 2.3 hectares of iron-rich soil, shielded from harsh winds by its geographic location and kissed by marine breezes. Here, the Vermentino and Ansonica grape varieties flourish, producing wines that encapsulate the island's essence—its energy, salinity, and beauty.

Gorgona 2025, described by Andrea Bocelli as “Aphrodite's wildest, most luminescent pearl,” reflects the perfect amalgamation of soil, climate, and the dedicated people nurturing it. With limited production of just 9,000 bottles, each vintage tells a different story. The label, designed by Simonetta Doni of Studio Doni Associati, draws inspiration from Tyrrhenian Sea legends, where pearls symbolize the island's identity forming from the goddess Venus’s necklace.

This 2025 vintage showcases a brilliant straw-yellow color with golden undertones, releasing a bouquet that mirrors the island's maritime spirit. The scent offers initial Mediterranean notes—thyme, sage, floral hints—followed by succulent citrus and tropical fruit nuances developing with age. Each sip offers a refreshing and salubrious taste, resonating with a prolonged finish.

The journey of the grapes in 2025 began with a dry fall, transitioning into a colder winter rich with well-distributed precipitation. As the warm spring unfolded, the vines thrived, leading to a successful harvest in September under ideal conditions—cool and sunlit days for optimal grape maturity.

Gorgona stands as a beacon of social responsibility in winemaking, bridging excellence with an admirable cause. Gorgona is a testament that beauty and labor can regenerate lives. This vineyard project, coined “Frescobaldi for Social Responsibility,” delivers critical hands-on experience to inmates, aiding their journey back into society. Over time, the project restored a hectare of vineyard and expanded it further under expert supervision.

Logistics relay transformative outcomes. The collaborative efforts since 2013, including notable partnerships like Enoteca Pinchiorri, embody a collective vision of supporting Gorgona’s heritage through fine culinary developments. Donated vineyard equipment fosters ongoing improvements on-site.

Marchesi Frescobaldi has made a lasting mark on Tuscany’s viticulture for over seven centuries, emphasizing innovation and tradition while respecting the environment. With the unveiling of Gorgona 2025, they continue to illustrate the power of wine not just as a beverage but as an agent of change and a narrative of resilience.
