The 2026 Dujiangyan Village Candy Fair: A Sweet Start to the New Year with Cultural Traditions

The 2026 Dujiangyan Village Candy Fair: A Sweet Start to the New Year

On New Year's Eve in the picturesque city of Dujiangyan, located in China's Sichuan province, the much-anticipated 2026 Dujiangyan Village Candy Fair kicked off, celebrating the region's rich heritage and delectable treats. Known for housing the world's oldest functioning irrigation system, Dujiangyan blends tradition with festivity during this vibrant event.

The fair commenced with a stunning lantern parade themed around the ancient wisdom associated with water management. The large lanterns, derived from the tales of Li Ping, an ancient governor of Sichuan, illuminated the night sky, creating a memorable experience for attendees. Alongside these magnificent installations, various representations from local legends added to the fair's charm.

Experience Unique Themes and Local Delicacies

Running until January 3rd, the fair showcases a themed bazaar in the historic town of Kuansien, where visitors can indulge in traditional drinks, a variety of teas, liqueurs, and local specialties. Among the highlights are five products that secured geographical indication, including kiwi and Sichuan celery root, exquisite examples of intangible cultural heritage, and local culinary delights from various parts of Sichuan.

Ancient Kuansien also hosts an urban orienteering competition with two unique routes: the Ancient Dam Tour and the Kuansien Flavor Trail. Participants can register through a mini-program to collect stamps and enjoy special offers from partnering merchants. The event further features various cultural and tourist activities that enhance visitors' experiences, including demonstrations of intangible cultural heritage, interactive performances, and showcases of specialties from Dujiangyan’s international partner cities.

From January 1st to 3rd, the Sustainability Water Forever – Culture and Creation Industrial Park is hosting an interactive event in an ancient style to deeply engage visitors in the narrative. Guests can capture photos during the parade with performers dressed in traditional Hanfu (traditional Chinese attire) and animal-themed costumes or embark on designated trails that challenge them with tasks to earn “silver banknotes.” These banknotes can be exchanged for gifts or used in a prize lottery.

Embrace the Spirit of Innovation and Tradition

A special guest is the stylish animal costume “Nine-Tailed Lingjiu,” which boasts its intellectual property. This unique mascot has drawn attention in the past, facing issues with several tourist attractions that attempted to replicate its distinctive design. The authentic character made its appearance at the Lingzhan workshop within the industrial park and joined the parade, showcasing the magic of original creative design.

Beginning in January, the industrial park aims to curate a collection of intangible cultural heritage and water management-focused cultural and creative products for exhibits, sales, and interactive experiences. In addition, an online shopping mall dedicated to the Village Candy Fair has been launched, where digital avatars rooted in the local culture of Dujiangyan serve as exclusive ambassadors to promote events and showcase products.

In conclusion, the 2026 Dujiangyan Village Candy Fair not only brings together flavors and fun but also a celebration of the cultural significance plant in the heart of Sichuan. As visitors are entertained and engaged, they contribute to the festive economy and the preservation of traditional customs, making this event a noteworthy highlight to welcome the new year.
