Target Welcomes Top Retail Executives to Its Board in Strategic Move
Target Strengthens Leadership with New Board Appointments
In a pivotal move aimed at enhancing its strategic direction, Target Corporation has announced the appointment of two distinguished retail leaders to its Board of Directors. Effective March 1, 2026, John Hoke, III, former Chief Innovation Officer at Nike, and Steve Bratspies, former CEO of HanesBrands, will bring their extensive expertise to the Minneapolis-based retail giant.
John Hoke: A Legacy of Innovation
John Hoke has a rich history with Nike, where he spent over 30 years shaping innovation and design. As Nike's first Chief Innovation Officer, he led the global design team responsible for creating cutting-edge products across the Nike, Jordan, and Converse brands. His leadership in design has been a key factor in driving Nike’s market growth and product differentiation. Hoke's previous experience also includes a significant stint at Michael Graves Architecture & Design, where his creative contributions further underscore his ability to blend aesthetics with strategic function.
Currently, Hoke is the chair of the board at MillerKnoll and serves as an advisor for Piaggio Fast Forward, adding to his credentials in guiding brand growth and innovation. His deep understanding of consumer needs aligns perfectly with Target’s mission of delivering stylish and valuable products.
Steve Bratspies: Transformational Leadership
Steve Bratspies enters as another strong asset for Target's Board. Having led HanesBrands since 2020, he oversaw a significant corporate transformation, including the sale of the Champion brand and the acquisition of HanesBrands by Gildan Activewear. Bratspies's experience at Walmart, where he successfully served as Chief Merchandising Officer from 2015 to 2020, equips him with a vast understanding of retail operations and merchandising strategies.
His earlier roles also include positions at PepsiCo's Frito-Lay North America division, demonstrating his versatility and grasp over consumer goods. Bratspies’s ability to navigate complex business challenges will be invaluable as Target embarks on its new growth trajectory.
Strategic Alignment with Target’s Vision
These appointments come at a critical juncture for Target as it prepares for its next phase of growth under the stewardship of newly appointed CEO Michael Fiddelke. Christine Leahy, Lead Independent Director of Target's Board, emphasized that Hoke and Bratspies’s diverse experiences will support the Board in delivering strong governance and long-term value for shareholders.
"These appointments reinforce our commitment to strong oversight and our strategy focused on customer engagement and innovation," said Leahy. "We are thrilled to leverage John and Steve's extensive experience as we navigate the evolving retail landscape."
Target Corporation, which operates nearly 2,000 stores and a robust online presence at Target.com, has a longstanding commitment to supporting its local communities, contributing 5% of its profits to charitable initiatives since 1946. This new leadership signalizes Target’s strategic aim not only to enhance its market position but also to continue delivering meaningful contributions to society.
As John Hoke and Steve Bratspies join Target’s board, their wealth of experience sets the stage for an exciting new chapter for the retailer, aligning with its goal to bring joy and value to all families through its offerings. With a focus on style, design, and consumer understanding, Target is poised for ongoing success in a competitive retail environment.
