Ontario International Airport Introduces a Real-Time Shuttle Tracking System

Ontario International Airport (ONT) is revolutionizing the passenger experience with the launch of its innovative real-time shuttle tracking system. This new initiative aims to eliminate the uncertainty of shuttle wait times and enhance overall travel convenience for its passengers.

The real-time tracking system, dubbed Bus Genius, leverages cutting-edge technology that allows travelers to easily view the location and estimated arrival times of shuttles at any given moment. By scanning QR codes placed at shuttle stops throughout the airport, passengers can access a live map that provides immediate information on shuttle movements. These QR codes are also available at Travelers Aid stations and on the airport's website, flyOntario.com.

Elisa Grey, the Senior Vice President for Revenue Management at the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA), stated, "Travel should be as easy and stress-free as possible, and sometimes it's the seemingly small things that can make a big difference." The implementation of real-time shuttle tracking is a significant step towards making air travel smoother and more seamless for everyone passing through the Ontario airport.

Each shuttle in the ONT fleet is now equipped with a GPS-enabled tablet, constantly updating its location to reflect real-time movements within the system. Additionally, this technology aids drivers by providing essential time management data to help reduce instances of 'bus bunching', where multiple shuttles inexplicably arrive at the same time, leaving passengers frustrated.

The Bus Genius system was introduced to ONT after airport team members witnessed its effectiveness during a demonstration at the Airport Ground Transportation Association conference held in Nashville earlier this year. During this phase, feedback will be collected from users to fine-tune the system and enhance the experience even further.

As part of a larger initiative aimed at modernizing the airport experience, ONT is also in the process of upgrading its shuttle fleet. They are set to acquire four new 40-foot buses designed specifically for their needs, with hopes for delivery towards the end of 2027. Additionally, the airport has plans to incorporate eight electric buses and two compressed natural gas buses, thus transitioning from older models to more sustainable transportation options.

Valerie Valdez, a specialist in parking and ground transportation at ONT, emphasized the airport's commitment to creating a reliable and efficient ground transportation system tailored to passenger needs. "Our focus is on creating a ground transportation system that is reliable, efficient and built around the needs of our passengers," she noted. The integration of new vehicles and advanced tracking technology promises to keep the airport's transportation services at a high operational standard for years to come.

The decision to partner with the U.S.-based manufacturer Gillig came after an extensive review process, wherein various manufacturing options were considered. Having technicians located in the Inland Empire provides an added layer of local support for ongoing maintenance and care of the new fleet.
