Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Secures Contract for Sludge Incineration Facility Reconstruction in Tokyo

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Takes a Major Step in Eco-Friendly Waste Management

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (MHIEC), led by President Yoshihiro Noguchi and headquartered in Yokohama, has recently announced that it has secured a contract with the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Sewage. This contract is for the reconstruction of a sludge incineration facility located at the Southern Sludge Plant in Jonanjima, Ota Ward, Tokyo. The project aims to replace the aging incineration systems currently in place.

This new facility is set to derive power from the heat generated during the sludge incineration process using a high-efficiency binary power generation system. Remarkably, the incinerator will have the capability to generate more electrical energy than it consumes, setting a new standard for energy-efficient incineration technology. Additionally, it will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals. With a project contract value of 6.41 billion yen (excluding tax), completion is anticipated by March 2030.

Beginning from the 2023 fiscal year, MHIEC has collaborated with the Tokyo Bureau of Sewage and various sewage plant manufacturers on joint research to develop this energy supply-type incineration system. This partnership has focused on creating an incineration technology that minimizes environmental impact while maximizing energy output. The new incinerator will be the first of its kind, labeled a “carbon-negative incinerator,” designed to be more efficient than its predecessors.

MHIEC is celebrated for its strong legacy in the field of sludge treatment, which it has built upon since inheriting Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' extensive experience and technological expertise in 2006. The company excels at providing comprehensive solutions encompassing everything from construction to operations based on its significant track record in the sector.

Furthermore, MHIEC has achieved all six research and development objectives regarding greenhouse gas emissions and other performance indicators with this new incinerator technology. This has led to a favorable evaluation from the Tokyo Bureau of Sewage regarding the applicability of the technology, resulting in the current contract win.

As it embarks on this exciting project, MHIEC is poised to push forward on initiatives to promote energy conservation and climate change mitigation strategies through enhanced sludge incineration systems. The company intends to leverage this success to expand its order book and further develop technologies in sludge treatment and energy recovery.
