Uniting Cyclists for a Cause: The Scenic Shore Bike Tour
From July 26-27, the picturesque shore of Lake Michigan will play host to the
33rd Annual Scenic Shore Bike Tour in Mequon, Wisconsin. This inspirational event is anticipated to attract over a thousand cyclists of all ages and abilities, all coming together to support a vital cause - helping blood cancer patients and their families.
The Scenic Shore Bike Tour, organized by the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), is set to be a memorable experience, covering a total distance of 150 miles over two days. This fully supported event not only offers a chance to enjoy breathtaking views of the lake but also to contribute meaningfully to the mission of curing blood cancers and improving patient quality of life. According to LLS, funds raised through the tour will directly support ongoing research, patient support programs, and advocacy efforts dedicated to those affected by blood cancer.
A Ride for Everyone
The event caters to a wide array of cyclists, from seasoned riders to casual participants. Riders will have the choice of various distances to ensure everyone can participate: options include a
25-mile ride, a
75-mile venture, or the classic
150-mile journey that spans the entirety of the two-day experience. The routes are designed to be accessible, allowing participants to pedal according to their skill levels.
Coker Powell, LLS Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer, emphasized, “Scenic Shore is more than a bike ride; it’s a powerful movement. Whether you're riding solo, with family, or part of a team, your efforts bring hope and make an incredible difference.” This highlights the unifying spirit of the event that transcends mere cycling; it reflects a community rallying together for a cause that touches many lives.
Personal Stories Fueling the Ride
Among the participants is
Jessica Salmonowicz, this year's Honored Hero, a leukemia survivor whose life was saved thanks to LLS-funded research. She started riding in 2012 and continues to do so as a form of gratitude for the support she received. Additionally,
Paul Westrick, a multiple myeloma survivor and passionate advocate, credits LLS for significantly extending his life. Together, their participation serves as a profound reminder of what this event stands for - resilience, hope, and community support.
This year holds special significance for
Gwen Nichols, M.D., LLS's Chief Medical Officer, as she participates alongside her son, Jesse Rost. They share a deep commitment to advocating for cancer patients while raising necessary funds for LLS’s mission, especially in light of recent trends seen in research funding and healthcare costs. Dr. Nichols noted, “Donations are more important than ever; everything we do at LLS is patient-focused.” With over 75 years of dedication to advancing the fight against blood cancers, LLS focuses on patient-oriented care and innovative research to ensure a better future.
