UCB's Strategic Partnership with the U.S. Government
UCB, a prominent biopharmaceutical firm dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with severe illnesses, recently unveiled its agreement with the United States government. This collaboration aims to secure patient access to essential medications while simultaneously investing in the R&D and production of pharmaceuticals for those battling severe neurological and immunological conditions.
CEO Jean-Christophe Tellier emphasized the company's commitment, stating, "At UCB, we are driven by our mission to create lasting value for patients, both now and in the future. This partnership with the U.S. government underlines our pledge to make medications accessible for those in need, whilst advancing the scientific innovations that can significantly impact lives." Such missions are pivotal for UCB, given its extensive U.S. operations that have contributed significantly to job creation and economic growth.
Key Highlights of the Agreement
1.
Balanced Pricing Strategy: UCB will implement a more balanced approach to pricing for the launch of new medications across developed countries. This strategy indicates UCB's commitment to making treatments more affordable without compromising its research and innovation pipeline.
2.
Participation in the GENEROUS Program: UCB will actively engage in the government's GENEROUS program, furthering its duty to patients by ensuring their access to life-saving drugs.
3.
Onshore Manufacturing Expansion: The agreement allows UCB to continue its investment in onshore manufacturing, ensuring that critical medicines are produced within the U.S.
UCB's recent commitment earlier this year to strengthen its U.S. manufacturing presence, including a groundbreaking biologics facility in Georgia, reflects its long-term vision. This facility, heralded as the largest manufacturing investment in UCB's history, is projected to contribute around $5 billion to the U.S. economy and generate over 330 well-paying jobs in high-skilled positions. Such expansions play a crucial role in bolstering the domestic biopharmaceutical sector and enhancing the resilience of the supply chain for existing and future medications focused on immunology and rare diseases.
According to UCB, this agreement not only facilitates the execution of their strategic plan but also ensures continuous delivery of innovative treatments to both U.S. and global patients. As part of the arrangement, UCB is exempt from becoming subject to Section 232 Pharmaceutical tariffs concerning all present and future products, with specific terms kept confidential.
Moreover, UCB has committed to donating Keppra® (levetiracetam), recognized as an Essential Medicine by the FDA, to the National Stockpile controlled by the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR). This generous contribution aims to fortify the supply chain of critical medications in the U.S. and supports national preparation efforts, ensuring vital treatments remain accessible to patients when needed.
UCB's Commitment and Presence in the U.S.
UCB has maintained a lasting presence in the United States for many years, with its headquarters and multiple offices across states including California, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Washington, and Washington D.C. The company currently employs nearly 2,000 personnel focused on various departments, notably R&D, further enhancing its commitment to innovation and patient care in America. Since 2017, UCB has enlarged its U.S. workforce substantially, observing a growth of over 70%, with more than a quarter dedicated to research and development activities. Over the past decade, UCB has also made considerable investments through acquisitions and partnerships in U.S. firms, achieving 15 FDA approvals and making significant advancements in innovation.
