Collaboration for Seizure Awareness
The Epilepsy Foundation of America has embarked on an important initiative to raise awareness about seizure safety through a newly forged partnership with SeizeSense, a philanthropic nonprofit founded by young advocates. This collaboration is designed to educate the public while simultaneously addressing the stigma surrounding epilepsy.
Founded by Cristian Veloso, who has lived with epilepsy since childhood, SeizeSense has set out to provide critical educational resources to help people effectively recognize and respond to seizures. This is particularly relevant as the organization launches a national public service announcement (PSA) campaign in collaboration with major cinema chain AMC Theatres. The animated PSA aims to inform moviegoers about seizure recognition and offers guidance on how to assist someone experiencing a seizure.
The Importance of Education
The initiative was triggered by Veloso's personal journey with epilepsy. Diagnosed after experiencing a tonic-clonic seizure at the age of four, he endured a challenging path that involved extensive medical supervision and multiple medications. In his struggle, he found inspiration to create a movement to help others facing similar challenges.
“This partnership reflects the power of community-driven advocacy,” commented Bernice Martin Lee, CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation. By promoting efficient seizure first aid education across various public venues, the effort aims to empower communities with the knowledge needed to provide immediate assistance during seizure incidents.
Public Awareness Campaign
The PSA will be showcased in AMC Theatres from March 6 to April 2, 2026. The campaign also aims to reach a broad audience via National CineMedia (NCM) and Screenvision networks, ensuring the message reaches viewers nationwide.
Community and Educational Initiatives
In addition to the PSA campaign, SeizeSense will engage in further educational outreach, particularly within schools in the Miami area. Collaborations on fundraising events will also be established to support individuals living with epilepsy, focusing on essential resources and healthcare access.
Veloso emphasizes the critical nature of education: “Knowing how to react during a seizure can make a significant difference. Informed communities help individuals with epilepsy live confidently.” The emphasis on knowledge helps to dismantle misconceptions surrounding the condition.
Epilepsy: A Global Challenge
Epilepsy is recognized as the most common chronic brain disorder globally, affecting millions across various demographics, including 3.4 million Americans, according to the CDC. It’s characterized by unpredictable seizures that can affect behavior, awareness, and control over bodily functions. The challenges extend beyond the episodes themselves, with individuals often grappling with additional anxieties and social stigma prescribed by misconceptions about the condition.
As the Epilepsy Foundation and SeizeSense work together, their efforts are a reminder that no one should face epilepsy alone. With collaborative advocacy, educational campaigns, and community outreach, they aim to foster environments where individuals with epilepsy can thrive without fear of judgement or misunderstanding.
