Unveiling 'VINTAGE REGGAE POSTER SCRAP': A Visual Journey into Dub Culture
Yasushi Ide, a renowned music producer and the founder of Grand Gallery, has released a stunning new book titled
VINTAGE REGGAE POSTER SCRAP: All You Need Is Dub. This unique publication emphasizes Ide's deep-rooted connection to reggae and dub, making it a must-have for enthusiasts of these genres.
Following the success of
VINTAGE JAZZ POSTER SCRAP in Europe and the rapid sales of
JAPANESE MUSIC POSTER SCRAP - ROCK, which sold out 2,000 copies in just two months, this latest addition is eagerly awaited by fans. Reflecting a growing trend, it adds a new dimension to the collection of music posters that Ide has curated from his perspective.
The book features a wide range of original vintage posters alongside flyers, advertisements, and press photos, capturing the essence of reggae and dub culture. With highlights including works that span from classic reggae in Bristol to the punky reggae dub scene, it encompasses a diverse array of visuals that celebrate this rich musical heritage.
A unique aspect of this book is a special contribution by the legendary artist Don Letts, who played a pivotal role in linking punk and reggae music in 1970s London. In a landscape where books focusing on reggae record covers are scarce, this publication stands out as potentially the world's first that primarily showcases posters.
The categories covered in this book include ARTIST/GROUP/DUB, 2 TONE SKA, BRISTOL, PUNKY REGGAE DUB, CONCERT, MOVIE, ADVERTISEMENT, and PRESS PHOTO.
The book features a robust design by Hisato Ono, spans 256 pages in A5 format, and is published by Grand Gallery, overseen by Yasushi Ide himself. Priced at ¥3,630 (tax included), it is printed in Japan. For those interested, the
VINTAGE REGGAE POSTER SCRAP is currently available for pre-order through THE BEACH GALLERY online store at
grandgallerystore.com.
To celebrate the release, an exhibition titled
Dub Me Crazy! will be held from September 6 to September 15, 2025, at THE BEACH GALLERY located in Shibuya, Tokyo. This exhibition will feature posters and flyers that embody the book's aesthetic and theme. The gallery will be open from 1 PM to 6 PM, with the final day closing at 5 PM. Please note that the gallery will be closed on September 10. Entry fee is set at 1,000 yen.
In addition to the book, limited edition T-shirts inspired by two classic dub album artworks that significantly influenced Yasushi Ide will also be available. The first T-shirt features the artwork from
MAD PROFESSOR: A Caribbean Taste of Technology, a 1985 release known for its exceptional Caribbean dub sound, showcasing tracks like “FLESH AND CLEAN,” which continues to resonate even after 40 years. Permission for production was granted directly by Mad Professor.
The second T-shirt is based on
TRADITION: Captain Ganja and the Special Patrol, which Ide fondly remembers purchasing simply due to its captivating cover art. The album offers a cosmic dub experience reminiscent of an expansive journey through space. Official permission for this design was obtained from the original label through Japan's Ultra-Vibe distribution.
Pre-orders for the T-shirts will commence on August 20 at 9 AM, exclusively available through THE BEACH GALLERY online store. For more details, visit the official online store.
In creating both the book and merchandise, Yasushi Ide continues to honor the legacy of reggae and dub while making it accessible for both new fans and seasoned enthusiasts. These offerings reflect Ide's passion, artistry, and dedication to celebrating the musical currents that have shaped contemporary culture around the globe.
