ART FAIR TOKYO 20: A Milestone Celebration in Japanese Art
Starting tomorrow, the highly anticipated
ART FAIR TOKYO 20 will open its doors for four days, from March 13 to March 15, 2026. This year marks the 20th edition of Japan's premier independent art fair, showcasing a diverse spectrum of contemporary art from both local and international galleries.
The mastermind behind this event,
aTOKYO Inc., aims to expand the Japanese art market's presentation while fostering an open dialogue among art stakeholders. With a selection of
141 carefully curated galleries participating this year, the fair promises to deliver a vibrant and inclusive environment for art enthusiasts.
Expanded Programs and Collaborations
This year, the fair will not only feature an
extensive range of exhibitions at the
Tokyo International Forum located at Marunouchi 3-5-1, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, but also enhances its lineup through exciting offsite programs. Collaborations with
Mitsui Fudosan Co., Ltd will enable satellite venues, and the inclusion of an
official bar managed by the renowned garage bar,
Homunculus in Ebisu, adds a unique social dimension to the experience.
Significantly, leading media partners such as
Nikkei Inc. and
GQ JAPAN will also join forces to ensure comprehensive coverage and engagement throughout the event, alongside new media partner
J-Wave.
Exclusive Exhibition by Takamitsu Miyajima
A highlight of this year’s fair is an exclusive exhibition by
Takemitsu Miyajima, an iconic figure in contemporary art, particularly recognized for his use of digital counters exploring time and life. His special display will be part of the
“Encounters” section, and will underline the significant relationship between time and existence—a recurring theme in his work. Miyajima has garnered international acclaim since his debut at the Venice Biennale in 1988 and continues to engage in socially relevant projects, making him a fitting signature artist for this 20th anniversary.
Dialogue on Art and Society
In conjunction with the fair, the official talk program titled
“Dialogue: ASK ART, WHY?” will provide a platform for thought-provoking discussions on the role of art within society and its intersection with various phenomena. Organized by ART FAIR TOKYO, and in collaboration with art platforms like
artTunes, these dialogues aim to open up conversations that will inspire future artistic engagements. For details regarding the topics and speakers, the official dialogue website will offer all necessary information.
Related Events and Film Discussions
Another notable event in association with ART FAIR TOKYO 20 will be a talk held at the
Tokyo Innovation Base, focusing on the structure of value in society concerning art and innovation. This event on March 14, 2026, will showcase contributions from a variety of contemporary creators, artists, entrepreneurs, and scientists, reflecting on how art can drive innovative changes in today’s world.
Furthermore, on March 15, a dedicated talk titled
“FILMS - Art and Film? The Future of Un-definable Moving Images” aims to address the future of cinematic representation with key industry speakers, ensuring a rich dialogue about the evolving landscape of visual media.
