KRAFTON’s Exciting New Adventure: Project Windless
KRAFTON, the renowned South Korean video game company, recently showcased the first official trailer for their upcoming action RPG titled "Project Windless". This new game, developed by KRAFTON Montréal Studio, takes inspiration from the acclaimed fantasy novel series "Tears of the Blackbird" (涙を呑む鳥) written by Lee Young-do. The unveiling took place on February 13, during Sony Interactive Entertainment's PlayStation® video broadcast "State of Play", capturing the imagination of global gamers with its stunning visuals and exhilarating narrative.
A Rich, Open World Experience
"Project Windless" is designed as an expansive open-world RPG that thrusts players into the heart of continent-spanning conflicts. The game features a combination of cinematic storytelling, skill-based combat, and large-scale battles, all beautifully rendered using Unreal Engine 5. Players can anticipate a seamless world filled with majestic landscapes and vertical terrains, defined by epic wars.
This non-linear gameplay allows players to explore freely, engage in combat, and interact with significant factions to shape alliances, conquer territories, and navigate the vast conflicts that envelop the world.
Set in a Mythical Era
The setting of "Project Windless" transports players to a time nearly 1500 years before the events of the original novel, when myths were still forming. It skillfully provides an enjoyable experience for newcomers while enriching the narratives for existing fans of the saga. Within this world, four intelligent races thrive—"Humans", "Rekon", "Naga", and "Tookiebi"—each with their own unique cultures, conflicts, and worldviews.
Become the Heroic King
In this grand tale, players assume the role of a legendary warrior from the Rekon tribe, known as the "Hero King." This tribe is recognizable by their bird-like physical traits and remarkable strength. Armed with dual swords forged from stellar metal, players will carve through hordes of enemies, face colossal beasts, and lead their forces into monumental warfare.
Developing relationships and building fame will enable players to foster inter-race collaborations, laying the groundwork for future kingdoms.
Revolutionary Mass Technology for Real-Time Battles
Utilizing "Mass Technology", KRAFTON has introduced an innovative backend infrastructure that supports real-time large-scale battles. This exciting technique enables thousands of soldiers and massive creatures to engage in dynamic warfare simultaneously. Combat in "Project Windless" is swift, requiring players to think tactically and exhibit combat skills as they directly participate in battles, driving the flow of warfare through individual actions.
Insights from the Development Team
Patrik Méthé, the Creative Director and Head of KRAFTON Montréal Studio, expressed a profound commitment to the game's vision, stating, "From the beginning, we questioned what it truly means to embody legendary figures in a fantasy world. For us, it’s about granting players genuine agency, not only in combat but in how wars unfold, alliances are formed, and histories are crafted. ‘Project Windless’ is designed on the premise that legends are not just to be observed but are actively created through gameplay."
KRAFTON Montréal Studio is collaborating closely with the development team in Pangyo, South Korea, blending Western AAA development expertise with authentically Korean mythological elements.
