Celebrate Japan’s Rice Culture with Plenus
Introduction
As the world becomes increasingly globalized, preserving cultural heritage has never been more critical. Japan, with its age-old traditions revolving around rice, has taken a significant step to pass on this vital aspect of its identity to future generations. Plenus Inc., a company well-known for its popular restaurant chains, is leading this initiative through their event entitled
“Learn About Rice: A Family Workshop and Tasting Experience”, scheduled for April 5, 2026.
Event Overview
The event comprises two separate sessions in the morning and afternoon, completely free of charge, aimed at educating families. Held at Plenus's Kayabacho office located in Chuo City, Tokyo, this event is designed for elementary school students (4th to 6th grade) along with their parents. The goal is to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japan's rice culture through hands-on learning.
Activities Offered
1.
Rice Workshop: Participants will explore the fundamental aspects of rice, including its production methods and varieties. The workshop will teach attendees about:
- The different methods of rice cultivation
- The entire process from harvesting to being served on dining tables
- An overview of various types of rice produced in different regions of Japan
After gaining this foundational knowledge, participants will engage in a rice tasting experience where they will sample four different rice varieties. This immersive experience will allow them to discern the unique scents, sweetness, and textures of each type of rice through direct engagement: seeing, touching, and tasting.
2.
Cultural Tour: Participants will also have the opportunity to tour the Plenus office, featuring a colossal mural titled
“Seasons of Terraced Rice Fields,” approximately 8 meters tall. This mural beautifully represents the four seasons of Japan's rice terraces. On the seventh floor, attendees can admire the mural in its entirety, while the eighth floor offers a more detailed view. Additionally, the office rooftop hosts the
“Kayabacho Aozora Rice Field,” where city children can participate in hands-on rice cultivation.
Noteworthy Host
The workshop will be hosted by
Riri Tani, a prominent researcher and journalist dedicated to linking rice's value to society. As a certified rice sommelier by the Japan Rice Cooking Association, Tani has made numerous media appearances and has conducted workshops for various events organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.
