Discover Tokyo's Water History at the Tokyo Waterworks Historical Museum
The Tokyo Waterworks Historical Museum is hosting a variety of events aimed at elementary school students, particularly those in grades 3 and 4, during the summer break from July 18 (Saturday) to August 31 (Monday) in 2026. These events are designed to be educational and fun, providing children with the opportunity to learn about the history of Tokyo's water supply, which dates back to the Edo period.
Summer Research Events
Throughout the program, several events are scheduled:
Water Experiment Event
Dates: July 23 (Thursday) - July 25 (Saturday)
Time: Session 1: 10:30 - 11:30 AM / Session 2: 2:00 - 3:00 PM (same content each day)
Target Audience: 3rd and 4th graders with accompanying adults
Limit: 20 families per session
Participation Method: Advance registration required via the website (Registration: June 20 - July 5)
Join the staff from the Tokyo Waterworks Bureau to conduct exciting water-related experiments focusing on water purification and quality inspection.
Guided Tour of Water History
Dates: July 29 (Wednesday) - August 2 (Sunday)
Time: 10:30 - 11:40 AM (same content each day)
Target Audience: Elementary school students and their families
Limit: 15 families per session
Participation Method: First-come, first-served registration on the day (numbered tickets will be available from 10:00 AM)
This special summer edition of the museum's guided tour includes a 'book talk' featuring resources to help students learn more about the history of water.
Edo Period Bubble Workshop
Dates: August 11 (Tuesday, holiday) and August 20 (Thursday)
Time: 10:30 - 11:30 AM (same content each day)
Limit: Approximately 30 participants per day
Participation Method: First-come, first-served (just show up at the venue)
Experience the joy of creating bubbles as they did in the Edo period using the seeds of the mukuroji tree and bamboo straws.
Lecture on Edo Water Supply
Dates: July 19 (Sunday) and August 16 (Sunday)
Time: 2:00 - 2:45 PM (different content each day)
Target Audience: 4th graders (accompanied by parents, adult-only participation is generally not allowed)
Limit: 30 participants per session
Participation Method: First-come, first-served registration (starts at 1:45 PM)
Learn about the water supply mechanisms of Edo, including the Kanda and Tamagawa waterways.
Limited-Time Exhibit on Tamagawa Waterway
Dates: July 28 (Tuesday) - August 6 (Thursday)
This exhibit is available for visitors to learn more about Tamagawa waterway and the water supply system in Edo.
Family Game Event
Dates: August 22 (Saturday) and August 23 (Sunday)
Time: 1:00 - 4:00 PM
Participation Method: Free participation (tickets available at 1F reception)
Enjoy mini-games that the whole family can participate in, with opportunities for fun photo moments!
Animation Screening
Dates: August 7 (Friday), August 9 (Sunday), and August 11 (Tuesday, holiday)
Time: 2:30 PM for elementary students / 3:00 PM for preschoolers
Participation Method: Free viewing

Water Usage Exhibit

This exhibit prompts thought about how much water is used in households.

About the Museum
The Tokyo Waterworks Historical Museum, located in Bunkyo Ward, is a PR facility managed by the Tokyo Waterworks Bureau. It showcases the history and technology of Tokyo's water supply, spanning about 400 years from the Edo period's water pipes to the modern water supply system. Historical displays include actual Edo period wooden pipes and a recreation of an Edo-style tenement area, alongside valuable documents related to the history of water management.

Closed: Every fourth Monday of the month, New Year holidays
