Catholic University of America Joins Elite Consortium of Space Research Institutions

On May 18, 2026, the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) announced the official election of the Catholic University of America (CUA) as a member institution, expanding USRA’s consortium to a notable 124 institutions. This prestigious membership not only highlights CUA’s significant contributions to space and aerospace research but also recognizes its commitment to fostering advanced studies and dissertation research leading to doctorate degrees in related fields.

CUA has a long and distinguished history in the area of space science, excelling in heliophysics, astrophysics, and planetary science. Its Institute for Astrophysics and Computational Sciences (IACS) has been renowned for its collaboration with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) since the mid-1990s. This partnership has given rise to two active cooperative agreements: the Partnership for Heliophysics and Space Environment Research (PHaSER) and the Center for Research and Exploration in Science and Space Technology II (CRESSTII). Notably, USRA was one of CUA's partners in the PHaSER initiative, shining a light on the shared goals of fostering research excellence and innovation.

The Catholic University of America has also invested significantly into establishing various facilities that offer interdisciplinary research opportunities for its students, faculty, and sponsors. Following its attainment of Carnegie R1 designation in 2025—which signifies very high research activity—CUA is poised to strengthen its research capabilities and impact through strategic partnerships. Recently, the university aligned its values with those of USRA by supporting the USRA’s HBCU ST Council meeting.

Dr. Elsayed Talaat, President and CEO of USRA, expressed enthusiasm welcoming CUA as a member, stating, "We are thrilled to have The Catholic University of America join our University Association. We eagerly anticipate the valuable contributions of CUA as we continue our endeavors in space science research and the development of collaborations that connect academic research with real-world challenges in space exploration. CUA's expertise complements USRA's legacy of excellence and mission to advance knowledge in service to humanity."

Founded in 1969 under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences, USRA operates as a non-profit corporation dedicated to the advancement of space-related science, technology, and engineering. By engaging the university community and leveraging its in-house scientific leadership, USRA conducts significant research and educational programs funded by federal partnerships, helping to inform and shape the future of space exploration. With the Catholic University’s new membership, USRA is well-positioned to further enhance its collaborative efforts in the realm of space research and development.
