The 350-Year Legacy Unveiled: Tamanohikari's Latest Project Celebrates Art and Truth

Unveiling the 350× Project: A Celebration of 'Truth'

Tamanohikari Sake Brewery, with its rich history spanning over 350 years in Kyoto's Fushimi district, is set to launch the highly anticipated fourth edition of the 350× Project on March 1, 2026. This initiative, a collaborative venture with Skeleton Crew Studio, invites an array of talented artists to explore the profound theme of 'Truth', marking an innovative step in the intersection of sake and art.

The Essence of 'Truth'

The theme of this new edition, 'Truth', raises questions about the nature of reality. Is what we see truly the whole picture? Through rich narratives, the project encourages us to reflect upon the transformations in perspective that reveal deeper truths—those moments when our hearts resonate with emotion. The fourth edition sees the participation of six diverse creatives from Taiwan, Korea, and Kyoto, each adding their unique interpretation of 'Truth' through the medium of beautifully designed labels.

A Diverse Team of Innovators

This edition showcases an eclectic mix of creators, marking a first for the project as it introduces a chef among the artists. Notable inclusion are:
  • - Shirayama Ko: Renowned chef and owner of the aged sushi restaurant 'Man', known for his philosophy of 'waiting' as an art form, he brings culinary insights into the world of sake.
  • - Ueta Hiroshi: A calligrapher whose international achievements blend literary exploration with visual arts, encapsulating the spirit of Kyoto.
  • - Nakajima: An indie game creator known for pixel art who expands on storytelling through digital experiences.
  • - SAITEMISS: A Taiwanese illustrator whose works breathe life into quotidian moments through emotive character portrayals。
  • - Matsalworld: A South Korean 3D artist who explores romantic narratives of overlooked animals in society, integrating rich visual depth.
  • - Reiji: A multi-facetal artist and actor who embodies a borderless artistic spirit, known for captivating narratives through art.

A New Frontier in Sake Making

With the introduction of yeast No.77, Tamanohikari breaks new ground, employing distinctive high acidity, high koji ratio, and high yeast starter methods. This innovative approach distills a 'Truth' that was not previously visible—a commitment to creativity that embraces the unknown.

Hiroshi Ando, the master brewer at Tamanohikari, shared insights from this ambitious project: “We designed with the belief that new flavors arise from the intersection of 'interesting' concepts. This sake is aimed to be enjoyed with meals, striking a perfect balance of acidity, sweetness, and floral aromas. The outcome is reminiscent of white wine, providing an exciting experience for both sake aficionados and newcomers alike.”

A Broader Creative Collaboration

The 350× Project’s fourth edition also shifts its approach towards creative collaborations, moving beyond only inviting from the host’s side. Instead, it celebrates a continuous relay of introductions among past participants, fostering a new generation of creators. The notable completion of the project intertwines to broaden the narrative and gain fresh perspectives, essential for the evolving world of art and craft.
