Introduction to 'Migration Marriage'
In a groundbreaking initiative, the Japan Marriage Support Association, based in Minato, Tokyo, has launched a project called 'Migration Marriage' that offers simultaneous introductions to both prospective spouses and potential relocation destinations. Komagane City, located in Nagano Prefecture, has partnered with this project, and as of June 2025, it has received a total of 201 applicants keen on combining their marriage goals with a move to the countryside.
What Is 'Migration Marriage'?
'Migration Marriage' is designed for singles desiring to transition from urban life to rural living, providing matchmaking services alongside relocation assistance. This initiative is significant as it addresses multiple societal issues in Japan, including declining birth rates, rising unmarried populations, and rural depopulation. By merging marriage support with local revitalization efforts, the project aims to create sustainable communities.
Target Audience
- - Individuals aged 20 to 50 who wish to move to the countryside coinciding with marriage.
- - Services are provided at no cost, with no registration or usage fees required. Note that eligibility criteria may differ by municipality.

Nestled in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture, Komagane City is known for its stunning natural landscapes, surrounded by the Central and Southern Alps. The city boasts essential facilities, such as supermarkets and medical institutions, making it an attractive option for residents. It is gaining recognition as a 'city where nature and convenience coexist.' A Commitment to Sustainable Settling
Since the launch of 'Migration Marriage' in January 2021, Komagane City has established a comprehensive support system through the 'Egao Dating Support Center.' This center engages with applicants via online matchmaking and provides on-site visits, while also offering advice regarding housing and employment options.
Thanks to these concerted efforts, the number of applicants has reached 201 by the end of June 2025, with increased participation in marriage events from outside the city. Success stories of several couples who found love and chose to settle in Komagane have emerged, positioning the project as a notable case of positive migration and residency changes.
