Home State Health and Centene Foundation Launch Medical Respite Program in St. Louis
In a significant step towards addressing homelessness, Home State Health and the Centene Foundation are collaborating to introduce a pioneering medical respite program in St. Louis. This initiative brings together healthcare and social services to support individuals experiencing homelessness, allowing them a safe and supportive environment for recovery.
The program is backed by a generous $225,000 grant to Three Steps Home, the organization formerly known as Bridge of Hope Ministries. This funding underscores the commitment to providing essential healthcare and support services to some of the city's most vulnerable populations. Located at the Peter Paul Community Campus on Florissant Avenue, this program stands as St. Louis' first dedicated short-term residential recuperative care facility aimed at post-acute care for the homeless.
A New Approach to Healing
The medical respite program offers comprehensive on-site clinical care tailored to the unique needs of individuals recovering from illness or injury while lacking stable housing. This initiative is more than just a medical facility; it encompasses a holistic approach, featuring referrals for behavioral health and substance use services as well as personalized recovery plans.
Residents will have access to critical support essentials, including meals, clean clothing, laundry services, and family support, helping to address the various factors affecting their health. Optional spiritual care will also be provided, aiming to promote healing in a dignified environment. The goal is to facilitate a seamless transition for individuals from temporary medical care to more stable housing solutions.
Community Impact
Shawn Furey, President and CEO of Home State Health, expressed the organization's pride in supporting this innovative program. He emphasized the importance of addressing not only physical health needs but also creating pathways for individuals to attain independence and stability. The initiative aims to build a healthier community by transforming lives one individual at a time.
Three Steps Home has been a significant presence in North St. Louis City for over two decades, providing vital health and social services. The opening of this medical respite program fortifies their mission, allowing them to extend their reach and provide care that bridges the divide between health services and housing.
A Collaborative Effort
The program also serves as a model of collaborative care, integrating nonprofit partners who supply a variety of essential services. Located within the Community Campus, this initiative aims to streamline access to housing support, healthcare, and benefits assistance, making it easier for individuals to receive comprehensive help in a single location.
Sonia Deal, CEO of Three Steps Home, highlighted the importance of this partnership in breaking down barriers that prevent individuals from accessing critical health resources. She noted that the medical respite program would serve as a bridge, helping individuals not only regain their health but also find stable housing and rebuild their lives.
Looking Ahead
A grand opening ceremony is set for April 23, 2026, at 9:30 AM at the Peter Paul Community Campus, marking a significant milestone for both the organization and the residents it aims to serve. The event will celebrate this important partnership and the vision of a more robust and healthier St. Louis.
