The Renewal of Kamikebukuro Library Promises A Dynamic Community Space
On June 6, 2023, the Kamikebukuro Library in Toshima City underwent a significant renovation aimed at redefining its role within the community. The transformation of this facility is part of Toshima's Basic Plan for implementing a new kind of library, marking the first step toward a more inclusive and welcoming space for all. Gone are the days when libraries were only places to read in silence; the new Kamikebukuro Library embraces a philosophy of accessibility, education, and community engagement.
The newly opened library has responded to the needs of the community by increasing seating capacity from 74 to 164. It has been thoughtfully designed with distinct functions and features on each floor. The entrance floor (first floor) is a vibrant space where conversations can flourish; it includes a dedicated corner for children and young adults, lounge seating, and a terrace where visitors can enjoy food and drinks. The second floor has been designated as a quieter area conducive to reading and studying, featuring spaces for self-study and computer access. This zoning provides a comfortable environment tailored to various user needs.
Adding to its appeal, the library's basement houses a makerspace that encourages creative endeavors. Here, patrons can explore exciting technologies such as 3D printers and UV printers that allow them to craft unique items like acrylic keychains. The makerspace cultivates a nurturing atmosphere for hands-on learning and innovation.
To celebrate the grand reopening, the library will host a string quartet concert by members of the Toshima Philharmonic Orchestra on the morning of June 6, followed by a board game event in the afternoon for further community interaction on both June 6 and 7. Looking forward, Kamikebukuro Library plans to host a variety of events that break traditional boundaries, continuing to establish itself as a center of modern community activity.
In remarks addressing the library's reopening, Toshima Mayor Miyuki Takagi stated, "Kamikebukuro Library symbolizes our vision of a new library that functions as a hub for community, culture, and creativity. With a mix of lively areas and quiet spaces, study rooms, a makerspace, and a terrace adjacent to the park, we have created a space that will cater to all ages, from infants to seniors. I invite everyone to visit!"
