Exploring the Future of Retail: Collaboration Between Gen Z and AI
In an age where digital commerce is surging, the question, "Why visit a physical store?" has become more pertinent than ever. Beats Inc., a leading marketing firm specializing in retail experiences, has embarked on an exciting collaboration with three prominent universities in Japan: Aoyama Gakuin University, Sugino Fashion College, and Kanagawa University. Together, they aim to create innovative store experiences by leveraging the creativity of Gen Z students and the capabilities of AI tools.
This transformative project runs from May 2026 to February 2027, under the guidance of Philgate Inc., known for its expertise in business development and marketing. By combining their marketing prowess and spatial design knowledge with the students' fresh perspectives, the aim is to co-create the future of retail environments.
The Importance of In-Person Retail
As e-commerce continues to dominate, physical stores must evolve to remain relevant. Today's consumers view retail spaces not just as places to purchase products, but as venues for memorable experiences and emotional connections with brands. They seek visually engaging environments that encourage sharing on social media, making it imperative for brands to innovate their physical touchpoints.
Beats believes that collaborating with the Z generation—who hold distinct insights into consumer behavior—is paramount. Through the integration of rapidly evolving AI technologies into the project, they hope to uncover new possibilities in store experiences that resonate with contemporary shoppers.
An Educational Approach to Innovation
This initiative is more than just lectures; it is a co-creation project. It invites students from the three universities to engage deeply with current retail challenges. The curriculum includes interactive activities where students and industry professionals explore innovative solutions to meet the evolving expectations of consumers.
Moreover, a series of guest lectures will feature leading figures from the retail and marketing sectors. Among these esteemed guests is Park Hamin, CBO of the popular fashion platform ‘nugu,’ who will guide students through cornerstone concepts of store marketing and practical applications of AI tools in enhancing retail experiences.
Structure of the Program
The project is designed to guide students through five phases: Research, Ideation, Creation, Testing, and Presenting. Each phase provides them with hands-on experience, leading them from initial inquiries about what attracts Gen Z in-store to the development of practical solutions.
1.
Research: Students will investigate features of social media hotspots that appeal to Gen Z, gathering insights to inform their design processes.
2.
Ideation: Utilizing AI tools, students will brainstorm and outline the essential elements for creating next-generation retail environments.
3.
Creation: They will produce visual materials, including graphics and displays, applying their learnings to enhance the physical space.
4.
Testing: Their creations will be displayed at the Sugino Fashion College's campus festival, allowing them to gather real-time feedback from visitors about their concepts.
5.
Presenting: The culminating event will feature student presentations during a final showcase, where the best ideas have the potential to be implemented in actual store promotions.
Looking Ahead: Implementing Successful Ideas
As the program culminates in February 2027, students will present their refined retail concepts. The most promising ideas will be considered for real-world applications, supported by Beats and Philgate. This approach not only empowers the next generation of marketers but also seeks to redefine the standards for brand experiences in the retail sector.
