Umbra Secures Exclusive Contract with NRO for Enhanced Radar Services

Umbra, a prominent American space technology company, has announced a significant milestone in its ongoing collaboration with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). The company has been awarded a sole-source contract to deliver radar commercial augmentation (RCA) services, marking the next phase in their partnership focused on enhancing U.S. national security through superior intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. This award is a continuation of four years of fruitful collaboration, providing the NRO with robust access to innovative, American-built commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technologies.

In an official statement, David Langan, the CEO of Umbra, expressed the company’s pride in the trust placed in them by the NRO. The partnership has consistently demonstrated a commitment to meeting the demanding needs of U.S. intelligence missions, and this recent endeavor aims to strengthen that legacy. Umbra's team is dedicated to addressing complex remote sensing challenges and quickly transforming new concepts and technologies into practical applications that bolster national security.

The NRO contract highlights Umbra's capacity to offer assured, global tasking across its satellite constellation. With this capability, the firm will deliver high-resolution radar imagery characterized by rapid revisit times and low latency, directly servicing government clientele. This responsiveness is critical for intelligence operations that require timely access to accurate data.

Over the past four years, Umbra has proven its reliability as a partner for the NRO, having provided more than 100,000 images to support U.S. operations in high-priority areas around the globe. The company’s radar technology is designed to perform in all weather conditions, day or night, and in complex environments, showcasing the operational resilience that Umbra offers to the national security domain.

Continuing its commitment to innovation and expansion in the American space sector, Umbra recently announced the opening of a 20,000 square foot engineering facility in Reston, Virginia, expanding its capabilities and support for the NRO’s missions. Additionally, a new 50,000 square foot manufacturing facility in California has been established, where the company produces its spacecraft and associated components. This growth positions Umbra to continue enhancing its services and scaling its constellation in alignment with U.S. Government and allied missions.

The firm-fixed-price contract is structured to include a one-year base performance period, with two additional one-year extension options. This agreement not only underpins Umbra’s commitment to U.S. space-based systems but also emphasizes the importance of maintaining and advancing technological capabilities for secure operations in an increasingly complex global landscape.
