Florida Climate Week 2025: A Statewide Initiative for Climate Resilience

The fifth installment of Florida Climate Week (FCW), organized by the VoLo Foundation, has concluded its remarkable week-long series of events aimed at promoting climate action across the state of Florida. Running from October 6 to 12, 2025, the event attracted more than 1,800 participants and featured an impressive lineup of over 80 free events, both in-person and virtual. This year's theme focused on building local resilience and addressing the pressing climate issues faced by various communities throughout Florida.

The event was a multifaceted initiative that brought together citizens, local leaders, scientists, and organizations to collaborate on climate solutions. According to Thais Lopez Vogel, co-founder and trustee of the VoLo Foundation, "Florida Climate Week was a huge success, a powerful reminder that collaboration, innovation, and hope are driving real climate action across our state. We are moving from information to action, and that is the best news of all."

Highlights of the Week

Florida Climate Week consisted of 32 virtual sessions that attracted more than 600 online participants, while 51 in-person events engaged over 1,200 attendees statewide. The hybrid model reaffirmed the VoLo Foundation's commitment to providing accessible climate information and solutions. Participants engaged in expert-led webinars, hands-on cleanups, youth activities, and discussions on topics ranging from extreme heat and stronger storms to biodiversity and coastal restoration.

One key feature of this year's event was the initiative by the City of Jacksonville, which organized a public kickoff and hosted various community events throughout the week. In Central Florida, notable activities included e-waste recycling and textile collection in Orlando, while coastal partners coordinated beach cleanups stretching from Vero Beach to Jupiter.

Engaging Communities and Local Governments

A significant aspect of Florida Climate Week 2025 was the active involvement of local governments. Several municipalities joined as official partners, hosting events and community gatherings, while 18 mayors and local authorities issued proclamations recognizing October 6-12 as Florida Climate Week. This involvement emphasizes the necessity for community-driven solutions, highlighting that those who understand their local climate risks are best positioned to address them.

The initiative encompassed all four major regions of Florida:

• - North Florida: Jacksonville set the stage for various community events.
• - South Florida: Events from Miami to Jupiter showcased local climate solutions.
• - West Coast: Community gatherings in Tampa and St. Petersburg emphasized local action.
• - Central Florida: Programs in Orlando focused on recycling and sustainability initiatives.

Each region tackled its specific climate challenges while sharing science-based solutions and best practices, reinforcing the idea that meaningful progress can stem from local actions.

Moving Forward

The overarching aim of Florida Climate Week is to empower communities through knowledge and collaboration, aligning with the VoLo Foundation's mission to promote science-based climate solutions. "This week was about solutions and collaboration, because the decisions we make today will define the quality of life for future generations," Lopez Vogel emphasized.
