Piramal Pharma Solutions Unveils Advanced Microbiology Lab in Lexington, Kentucky
Piramal Pharma Solutions (PPS) has made significant strides in its ongoing expansion efforts with the recent inauguration of a state-of-the-art microbiology laboratory located at its sterile injectable facility in Lexington, Kentucky. This advanced lab marks a crucial development in PPS's ambitious $85 million Lexington expansion plan, aimed at bolstering its commercial-scale capabilities and improving operational efficiencies to better serve its clients.
The new microbiology laboratory was officially opened for routine Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) operations on September 11, 2026, and shortly thereafter, its accompanying sterility testing suite achieved conditional approval, making it one of the first significant components to commence operations as part of the ongoing facility upgrades. Full-scale manufacturing enhancements are anticipated to be operational by late 2027.
One of the notable features of the newly launched microbiology lab is its capacity. The lab more than triples the previous microbiology testing space, significantly improving laboratory workflow and accommodating future growth needs. The new setup is designed with three advanced biosafety cabinets, enabling concurrent testing which drastically reduces sample queue times, ultimately enhancing the responsiveness of the laboratory. Furthermore, all incubators have been consolidated into the new lab space, creating a more streamlined workflow conducive to effective monitoring and accessibility throughout various testing procedures.
Central to the lab's design is a dedicated sterility testing suite featuring a Grade C environment, which represents a remarkable upgrade from the laboratory's previous non-classified area. This new suite houses a fully integrated Grade A sterility testing isolator, which doubles the site’s testing capacity and allows for simultaneous processing of multiple samples. The isolator delivers increased flexibility, supporting both open and closed filtration methods, thereby meeting a wider array of product testing requirements. Additionally, built-in pass-throughs allow for the direct movement of samples from the manufacturing area to the laboratory, significantly reducing the risk of contamination and safeguarding the integrity of the products being tested.
These enhancements are impactful, with expectations to slash testing times by as much as 50%. By doing so, PPS aims to expedite batch release times, alleviate bottlenecks, and facilitate smoother transitions as development programs advance from clinical trials to commercial stages. The improved infrastructure not only reinforces contamination control but also fortifies sterility assurance capabilities, effectively mitigating supply risks and preparing the facility for anticipated commercial-scale demand.
