ASCET: Pioneering the Future of Standards in Critical Technologies Through Workshops and Collaborations

ASCET Launches Workshop to Propel U.S. Standardization Efforts

On May 14-15, 2025, the U.S. Standardization Center of Excellence for Critical and Emerging Technologies, now referred to as ASCET (Advancing Standardization for Critical and Emerging Technologies), conducted its inaugural workshop in the Washington metropolitan area. This gathering saw participation from nearly 200 stakeholders across various sectors, including industry representatives, government officials, academics, and standardization organizations.

The primary goal of the workshop was to bolster U.S. engagement in global standardization initiatives. With the rise of technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and biotechnology, the importance of establishing robust standards cannot be overstated. The workshop provided an essential platform for participants to delve into the significance of contributing to these global efforts actively.

A comprehensive agenda comprised various presentations and panel sessions that elucidated ASCET's role and mission. Attendees learned about the challenges and opportunities present in the realm of standardization. Additionally, breakout sessions were conducted to identify critical activities needed to foster U.S. progress in these emerging technologies.

Dr. Mohsen Seifi, the vice president of global advanced manufacturing programs at ASTM and the principal investigator of ASCET, stressed the urgency of integrating advanced standardization processes promptly. He highlighted, "This successful workshop marked a significant first stride toward operationalizing our goals, inviting key stakeholders to this pivotal global endeavor. By incorporating feedback and insights gathered here, we anticipate refining ASCET's scope to better align with industry needs and expectations."

As ASCET evolves, further workshops are on the horizon, driven by community input and strategic planning.

A Transformative Initiative

During the workshop, the newly adopted branding identity of ASCET was presented, articulating the initiative's transformative vision for American engagement in standards development. The focus of ASCET will center on four primary pillars:
1. Pre-standardization Activities: Setting the groundwork for future standards.
2. Workforce Capacity Building: Enhancing skills and knowledge in standardization processes.
3. Information Sharing Hub Development: Establishing a central repository for data and insights.
4. Pilot Programs for Pre-standardization: Testing frameworks in real-world scenarios.

ASCET aligns with the original aims established through the cooperative agreement between ASTM International and the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology. This partnership comprises various key stakeholders experienced in standards development, including ANSI, A3 Association for Advancing Automation, ASME, IEEE, UL Standards and Engagement, CSA Group, and Nexight Group.

Financial backing for these initiatives comes, in part, from a grant awarded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Award Number 70NANB24H334).
